The first steam engine to operate west of the Mississippi River, The Pacific of the Pacific of Missouri RR, was delivered at the Pine Street Wharf by river barge.

Last narrow gauge train on the Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad.

The Mobile & Gulf ends the last U.S. common carrier steam operation.

1950

President Harry S. Truman ordered the Army to seize control of the nation's railroads to avert a strike.

The 3rd Avenue El in New York City opens. Of Manhattans elevated railroads the 3rd Avenue El remained in service the longest, running for nearly 80 years.

George Pullman's first sleeping car, Chicago & Alton #9, makes it's first run from Bloomington, Illinois to Chicago.

September 01, 1873

The first commercially successful cable car line, the Clay Street Hill Railroad, opens for business in San Francisco.

September 01, 1887

In the state of Michigan, the Chicago & Northwestern builds a line from Iron River to Watersmeet.

September 01, 1888

Also in the state of Michigan, the St. Joseph Valley opens a 3' gauge line from Buchanan to Berrien Springs.

September 01, 1894

St. Paul & Duluth's Duluth Limited flees a forest fire which had killed over 400 people.

September 01, 1903

In the state of Michigan, the T&W (Toledo & Western?) opened it's line in Adrian from the Wabash Railroad to Adrian's own center.

September 01, 1909

In Ottawa, Ontario, workmen on the Grand Trunk begin to tear down the Central Depot to make room for a new Union Station. The newly completed Baggage Annex is used as a temporary station until the completion of the new building.

September 01, 1933

In the state of Michigan, the T&W ended passenger service to Adrian.

September 01, 1940

M.C. LaBertew becomes Vice-President and general manager of the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway.

September 01, 1941

The Denver & Rio Grande Western operated it's last narrow gauge train to Santa Fe, New Mexico.

September 01, 1947

A railroad travel installment plan, known as the Rail Traveloan Service, became effective with approximately 70 major rail lines cooperating with local banks to provide qualified applicants with with rail transportation, Pullman accomodations, all-expense trips and any passenger service regularly sold through railroad ticket offices.

The Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway received from Alco the first C-424's, #300-306, in the new broad stripe paint scheme.

In the Canadian province of Ontario, Canadian Pacific is authorized to abandon it's Kingston subdivision between Sharbot Lake and Snow Road.
