I was in Barstow in July as a side trip from Lost Wages.  I was new to the area and did most of my picture taking from the Amtrak station.  I also did some shooting from the bluff that overlooks the yard throat.  The bluff can be reached from Hillside Drive after a bit of a climb over some rocky terrain.  I used a 200mm lens from the bluff which worked quite nicely.  Do keep in mind that you're still in the middle of the **** desert. (Apologies to Elliot Gould from "Ocean's 11").

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

There is a place I go to that is elevated & gives you a wonderful view of the signal bridges, aux yard & mainline tracks

Used the Quality Inn which is on East Main St as your landmark

Turn left out of the parking lot & proceed on Main Street to Yucca St. Hang a right on Yucca. U will cross over the train tracks & where the road ends make the left. Proceed on this road only about 100/200' your landmark will be the junkyard on the right & right past the junkyard hang a left onto a overhang that will take you to the tracks. This location as a guideline for U iis about 1 mile east of the Harvey House which you can see from the overhang. Here is a video of the view from there

Another place if you have long lenses is in West Barstow where the SF & LA lines merge. Going west it will be just before Hwy 58.   Smile
