I "see" invisible trains ALL the time!

I looked at the schedule saying the train was there. I stared at an empty platform seeing only my suit case. Three hours later, the train appeared.

Worst part is that you can't tell which way the train went by looking at its tracks...

Not only that, they are quiet to the extreme.  Nothing but the slightest whisper as they go by.

Unfortunately, they're occasionally capable of triggering crossing gates.

Are these "invisible trains" the ones that people, who end up with mangled cars and worse, claim they didn't see or hear?

Is the reason for the "rat box" cameras from the other thread because it is now illegal to photograph invisible trains?

Reminds me of this:

Locomotive post-trip maintenance/ defect report: "Engine is missing."

Mechanic's reply:  "Engine found, where it should be."

How serious is the violation of the rule (GCOR)Confused for the engineer of said train to fail to blow for the crossing while the gates are operating?Evil

Never a problem.  The neighbors will tell you that every train that comes through that crossing blows the horn way too long.

I "see" invisible trains ALL the time! Really. I do.

Furthermore, the fine people at Kalmbach have the great experience too, and help other to have it!

TRAINS Magazine years ago use to have Kalmbach advertisements showing an older man looking at a model of a steam engine on a dresser. Nobody else could see what was going on in his mind, but the connotation was that he was having great visions of wonderful things in his head ...

That guy in the "Model on the Mantel" ad later became the Associate Editor of Modern Railroads magazine. I'm proud to say that he became my mentor in many respects, and was a surrogate "gramps" for my older daughter when we'd visit him in his Loop office. He's been gone for about twenty years by now--R.I.P., Frank!

And here I thought all along that flashing lights were stuck in the "on" position! Lucky I haven't been hit by said train, as I stop-look-and listen but never see it. Explains everything now that I think about it.

It's a violation, not only of GCOR, but of the FRA "train horn" rule, 49 CFR Part 222 which, with limited exceptions, requires trains to sound horns at public grade crossings not included in a "quiet zone."  My experience is that most railroads take this pretty seriously.  For one thing, failure of a train to whistle for a grade crossings where it is required could expose the road to serious liability in the event of a grade crossing accident, even if the crossing has operating gates
