CSX,

Cool to actually have found yourself in a picture?? Let me know if you see any pictures of a young guy with a Clemson hat giving a half effort wave, that would be me. The only place I have seen railrans on my territory is at Dolton Junction, maybe I should start thumbing through those pics....... [C):-)]

My last problem with RailPictures was that I forgot my password and login. Couldn't remember 'em for the life of me. But they have no easily available means of retrieving a forgotten password (probably none at all), so I ended up guessing until I got the right combination! Good thing I only have a small number of passwords I use between all the password-protected sites I'm on...

I've sent about 20 pictures and they've only accepted one. I think they accepted that one because it was of a rare train. The cog railway (highest in the world).

They do seem to be awfully picky over there, but I knew that beforehand, so I chose carefully before trying to get one accepted. So far, I'm batting 1000 - 1 submitted, 1 accepted.

My favorite road, but unfortunately one of their leased engines instead of their own.

Now I am up to 6 pictures. I find railroadforums.com to be better for photos. They have a gallery section too. You can post your photos and have people tell you what they think...you dont have to worry about having a photo rejected and many people can view them. Also RRpicturearchives.net is a great one too. Give one or both a try and you are sure to find them better than Railpictures.

I have 3 pics on there at the moment. But they are very picky. I once had 17 pics all rejected in a row, and they looked fine to me. But what can I do. Dave [:D]

Well, as my friend (also a respected photographer) said, "RailPictures.net is where I go to see the best of the best", and I agree. No offence to everyone who takes photos out there, but most of you shoot to shoot, with no consideration of lighting, angle, perspective, and sometimes, even your own artistic tastes. Photographers take these factors into each photo they shoot, whenever possible. I have over 70 shots on RP.net now, and I will give you all some tips to get your shots accepted.

  • Note the position of the sun, and if possible always try to stay on what will be the "sunny side" of the train. If it's an overcast day, if you can, your best bet is to shoot in black & white.

  • Don't always go for that "classic" wedgie shot, get inventive, if you have a zoom lens (optical, not digital zoom), USE IT! If you don't have a zoom on your camera, try a low angle, or a bridge shot on for size. Don't be afraid to try new things.

  • ALWAYS avoid any kind of foreground obstructions, such as brush, high weeds, a tree branch, etc. basically anything that really hinders a clear shot of the train. It's a good way to get your shot rejected real quick (I know from expierence). One exception however, would be if your train is creeping through high weeds.

  • For night shots, hey, to each his own. If the screener likes what he sees, then you get in, if not, then oh well. Your best bet for night exposures is to get 'artistic.'

  • Also, if you shoot prints, get a good scanner

Those are just some tips for better photos, you will tend to develop your own style of photography over time, as you learn the trade.

I've got a couple hundred posted at railpictures.net. (http://www.railpictures.net/showphotos.php?userid=439) I agree that they have become very picky of late and many times I don't agree with their rejections and/or reasons. But, I'd like to make a couple of points in their favor:

1. It's a private, commercial, for profit web site (though I don't think they make very much money at it), so they can do what they want and it's really not fair to hold this against them.

2. Sometimes, their rejections are out of ignorance - they don't know what they are looking at - but they can be educated.

3 Space costs money, so being selective helps keep their costs down.

4. There are some truly great pictures on the site - other than my own :-)

5. Rejections are not personal (even if it feels that way)

I would say that railpac gave some great tips on how to post at RailPictures.net. I would have to say that I do a better job of taking railroad photos since I have started posting on RPN. The things that railpac talked about are the lessons you learn very early when you try to post on this site. I guess in this case, you learn by your rejections!

My favorite rejection was the one that came back for poor lighting. It was a clear sunny day! [%-)]

I have submitted about 15 pictures to them and all were rejected. So, I posted them on my own website. http://www.geocities.com/miniwyo/homestead.html Take a look around the first couple of pages are about me but the other 2 are some of my best pics. I do get on RP.net and look around from time to time there are aome good ones, great shots to all who's pic are on there!!

Thank You. Here in Wisconsin, it seems to be easy in the summer along CN tracks. Plus none of the railroads around here are green so it does contrast quite a bit. I haven't taken any photos in a while due to no sun being out. Its been cloudy nearly everyday for a while and makes picture taking hard.

I have 95 photos at RailPictures.net (look at my signature). Yes, I have had many photos rejected but I didn't let that discourage me from submitting there. Don't take it personally if you get photos rejected. I'm sorry to say but I think some of you just gave up too easily. I my self have had atleast 80+ photos rejected. As long as you are happy with your photos, then that's what really counts.

He also doesnt like UP SD40-2's.
I would have more pictures on thier website if it wasnt for two things, first being not a good digital camera and second, I dont go out enough to get good photos. I have to drive miles to get a picture of something. I wont even waste my time taking a picture of the CN GP40-2LW in the yard in my town. We I take a picture of something, there has to be two things in the photo....except for the IC E-Units I shot.
The WC and CN helper coming down Byron Hill, they are both next to thier own boxcars, the four units coming up Byron Hill, if you look close, but in a blur, at left center you can see the end of the train through the trees, the picture with the WC, 1/2 WC, and CN shows three stages CN has taken in getting rid of the former WC. The BNSF has lots and lots and lots of green! Something that is hard to shoot.
