My father e-mailed me this article from his local paper. It seems the depot in Yemassee, SC is slated for a restoration. Here's a link to it. This station is a great railfan location located at the confluence of the CSX Charleston Sub and the CSX line to North Augusta, SC. It's also the point at which the Port Royal Railroad line branches of to Beaufort and Port Royal.

They are rehabilitating several train stations in NC as well. I hope it is a nation wide trend.

Yemassee, SC has a special meaning to lots of U.S. Marines, ( Between 1911 and) Up until 1964 it was the arrival point for anyone being assigned to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, SC.
Now a CSX property, previously was (ACL RR). Served daily by AMTRAK still, Station code YEM

There are some in Kansas that getting renovated. It's mainly to meet ADA compliances and be more attractive.

Just looked at a photo of the station in question and can think of very many stations that are more appealing to the eye than that square block of brick.
Two years ago, we rode the Silver Meteor from Washington to Jacksonville. I was awake when we went through Yemassee, and I was amazed at the number of people who were standing on the platform, waiting for the train to stop.

The Recruit receiving unit that worked the trains, ands busses loaded with recxruits destined for MCRD Parris Island, were not at all interested in station construction, and especially were the individual recruits not interested in the same either. That appreciation would come much later, and after much reflection in the interim.
It was a starting point for a life changing series of events, from which it usually took the recruits around a week or two to 'unpucker" .
Semper FI !
Some local high school student’s rejuvenated our ‘Amshack” and a business re-stored the old Monon Depot at Crawfordsville IN. The actual depot is now a massage parlor. They put in a garden, and some flower’s and painted the adjacent buildings. It really looks nice. I hope it is a nationwide trend as well!
The road to to success is always under construction. _____________________________________________________________________________ When the going gets tough, the tough use duct tape.

That sure beats stepping off the train for a smoke...

I can appreciate the historical significance of that building even from this distance.
That would have been a sweet Agent's job. A tiny piece of the action (commission) on every ticket of every man who left there to serve their country, and even those that didn't make the grade. You sure couldn't say you had nothing to do.
You would think with the right contacts, they could raise all the funds they needed from Marine railfans.

But, it is a good idea to have smoke stops. You can smell it when someone smokes in the bathroom.
