Railroad Junk Yard
Posted by albolabris on Thursday, July 23, 2009 9:06 AM

I thought I would come to the experts for this question I am looking for a railroad salvage yard in Northern Illinois [I’m in Rochelle, IL] some place where I could salvage old train axles and track…

I’m in the process of building a power hammer like this one http://www.appaltree.net/rusty/super_rusty.htm the axle would be used for the anvil base and the track would be used for the forming dies…

Thank, Scott

If you don't get a better or more specific answer here, go to your local junk/salvage yard and ask; they may seek for you.  Or, call the local railroads' offices for direction and suggestions (mechanical offices, yardmasters, trainmasters offices, etc.).

RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.

Oelwein, IA isn't toooo far from northern Illinois.  Transco operates a railcar repair operation out of the old CGW shops there and I'd bet they could hook you up with something.

 Google "railroad salvage".
