German Cab-Ride Video
Posted by beaulieu on Friday, July 10, 2009 12:50 PM

Here is a link to a Cab-Ride Video shot by DB Logistics Driver "Siggi" Siebert on July 4th, 2009. The train is an Intermodal from Sälzburg, Austria to Hamburg, Germany. The video shows the portion from Siekweg Interlocking on the south side of Göttingen to Hannover-Wülfel station. The video is run at approx. 8 times normal speed. You might note that he stops at a green signal, this is because the Signalman has mis-routed him over the Classic route rather than the NeuBauStrecke (High-Speed Line) which his train was booked to take. After calling up the Signalman and taking a 20 minute delay he gets sent on the correct route.

Wow, talk about addictive- I could blow off the rest of the afternoon watching that repeatedly.  A couple of observations- looks like they go through at least nine tunnels, but I don't recall seeing even one grade crossing!

.....And I can see how the creators of that alignment have made it possible to make it a "high speed line"....they went through the perpendicular hills instead of finding an acceptable grade over them.  What a nice length of railroad for modern high speed.....!

Correct, nine tunnels with a total length of 13,999 meters, or about 8.7 miles. There are also several viaducts of more than a mile in length.

There are no grade crossings on the NBS as German law doesn't permit it when line speeds are above 160 kph. The ICE trains are allowed 250 kph ( 155 mph) over the NBS portion of this route. This train had come over the NBS from Kässel to Siekweg Interlocking where it was diverted to the "Classic" line to allow a faster ICE to overtake it. It reentered the NBS at Edesheim Süd Interlocking, near Northeim where he was initially misrouted.

Siggi also has some other interesting videos, some set to music, if you do a search by his handle "Siggi155".

I would also check out 2libor on YouTube.  He has runs at actual speed from Warsaw to Prague and Venice to Prauge (change in Vienna.)  Hurry though, he used to have a Graz-Prague run and a Salzburg-Vienna run, but they are now missing from You Tube.  His videos are actually taken from the rear of the train; however, they are run in reverse so you get the impression you are going forward.

I would also check out petegabi for cab rides in Hungry.  He follows main lines and also rustic branch lines.  I think that he had more videos; but now some are missing, so hurry.

Neat!

Do any American railroad tunnels have lighting throughout?
