At least we know you're thinking about it.

On the other hand, maybe a trial is appropriate.

Open up a special email box.

Offer up a specific theme, and specify a specific period of time (measured in days) to submit a single entry.  Make sure everyone realizes that it's only a trial and that none of the photos will actually be used as such.

See what the actual response is.

Consider looking through the entries if you're not overwhelmed.  Even a cursory glance will help you winnow out the wheat from the chaff.  Time is not of the essence here, and it doesn't have to be for a contestant.

Close the e-mail box you used.

Or, keep an eye on some of the photos that show up here.  Invite a few prospective candidates to submit an entry.  This forum (and the Lounge in particular) become a resource for folks who might be able to submit an image that fits an upcoming theme.  Win-Win.  We see more folks' work on the forum, and you perhaps find potential editorial contributors.

Thumbs Up

I hope we are not seeing the beginning of the end of the Trackside feature!

I'm with you Jim, but all good things change over time...or at least think about it!  IMO anyway.

I don't think it has to be abandoned by any means.  And I understand the reasons to keep the posters within the halls of Kalmbach as it is much easier to control and operate (good terms).  There are a lot of picture takers out there who would love to show off thier photos.  And there are a lot of photographers out there who have photos which should be seen.  Keeping the work picture takers and photographers seperated is a huge, time consuming and thankless task which I do not wish upon anyone, especially when it would either take the person doing it away from his or her regular job, or add a job to the payroll which would have no ROI for the publisher.

RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.

Are you sure about that? Perhaps if they made the contest for subscribers only?  It might motivate some to join up.

My point was that such an endeavor could wholly consume one's time and that I would not fault Kalmbach for not wanting to expend the money.  And even confining just to subscribers would still be too time consuming.  Everybody takes pictures, not everyone is a photographer.  How many pictures would have to be reviewed to find three to ten photographs?

Even though I'm a proponent of the idea, I do realize that the logistics could be overwhelming.  That said, there may be a way to pull it off that we haven't thought of yet.

Most importantly, the seed has been planted - we know that the magazine/forum staff are aware of the idea and with any luck we may someday see it come to pass.  Or at least we can hope.
