Last paragraph in the article mentions air horns being stolen.  One carrier services a quarry where company service ballast trains are loaded.  The carrier no longer leaves the locomotives with the trains, as numerous sets of locomotives have had their horns stolen while at the quarry.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Several years ago some rocket scientist in Mitchell, SD (population 15,000) stole a locomotive air horn from the BNSF. It was highly publicized and a reward was offered for information.

About a month later, a local long haul trucker brought the horn to a local repair shop and wanted the horn mounted on his rig. The shop recognized it for what is was and immediately called the police.

This goober could have had it mounted elsewhere, but being the genius he was, apparently thought he could wait a month and everybody would forget about the theft.

The railroads will be watchin e-Bay et al looking for their stolen horns just like surveyors keep an eye out for their stolen equipment. Eventually the morons surface trying to hawk their ill gotten gains.

I once had a Leica total station stolen in Miami one day while my I-man ducked off behind a dumpster to relieve himself. I was 500 feet away, flagging for my rodman and watched the whole event unfold. The scumbags stopped suddenly in the right lane, one guy got out the passenger side and in a blink... it and the tripod was gone. I hit the boss up on the Maxtrac about it and boy was he mad... We waited for the police and filed a report. Just on a whim, I decided to stop in at the nearest pawn shop, on the way back to the office to face the music... Guess what I found behind the counter. Long story short... We got our gun back and the pair was arrested and eventually prosecuted. I still got my rear-end chewed out really good that day. Whistling

Not to be a jerk but... is this really a surprise?  We have about 50 SD70's and orther assorted units right along the mainline and in the yard, And I have to leave an old SW1500 parked out there to keep as target pratice. it's not great plan but it actually does help quite a bit.  that unit is still a good locomotive but it's cheaper to let them  shoot that up and just let them (hobo's, bums) crap in the cabs of the good units and keep the local intellictuals shooting at the old one. we loose at least 1 set of horns a week and while we have gotten TM cabeling lucky, we loose several thousand gallons of fuel often. Other common theft items include seats, builders tags, bells, fuel caps (why??) and headlights. This is still not a good thing but really?? Are any of us really surprised this happens?

i have seen cars fitted with loco air horns on you tube.....so why dont you ( the police / railroads )check up on people on you tube who have the horns fitted to their cars and run by air bottles  perhaps they could be traced...  there was a local car yard in australia that was getting parts removed from its vehicles   the thiefs worked out where the cameras were covering  so the car yard put very small spy cameras into coke cans and left them    the tv station showed all the people and their vehicles removing parts then what happened when the police went to their door....the main culpret was an interstate truck driver passing by every couple of days...  could be a good idea to fit small cameras beside the equipment where they could not be seen .......  peter
