My usual fishing/train watching site, I figured, was going to be packed with fisherman due to the walleyes making their trip back to Lake Winnebago from spawning (literally in places you can hop from boat to boat from one shore to the other). My usual spot is Gills Landing just outside of Weyauwega Wi on the CN's Superior Sub (Neenah-Superior) on the Wolf River. My other spot is the draw bridge in Oshkosh Wi on the CN's Neenah Sub (Fond du Lac-Neenah) about halfway between Neenah and Fond du Lac Wi. Sometimes the fishing isnt that great (many skunks in Oshkosh) but hey, I'm outside, fishing and watching trains. Nothing better than that.
My question is to those that fish and watch trains: Where is your favotire fishing/train watching spot?

1) Indian Creek nature center along the Cedar River and UP near Cedar Rapids, IA
2) On a boat on the Mississippi River on the Iowa - Wisconsin border with the BNSF on the Wisconsin side of the river and the ICE, now CP on the Iowa side.

Ever try the bridge over the creek near Stroebe Siding (N. Lake St.)? I'd bet that area holds crappies! In fact...I may just have to try my own idea out!

I haven't fished along Strobe in about 20 years but I see people fishing there about this time of year due to crappies and perch spawning. Another place is Main st bridge where you can see the CN main in Neenah. Not much to catch there after the Perch leave. That was about 2-3 weeks ago already
There are a few places here where you can fish and watch trains. I like going to green river, and fishing near the UP bridge across the river. And you can fish the river to the west with the railroad running on the cliffs above the river. Also there is a Railcar Repair facility on the north end of Rock Springs, nearby is a stocked pond at the fairgrounds. The fish seem to bite the best in the mornings when the repair shop is switching cars. I have also fished the Blacks Fork at Granger but the river isn't really that good for fishing. I also want to fish the Bear River around Evanston. The tracks follow the river pretty closely for a good ways.

One of my favorites is Spruce Creek PA on either side of the tunnel. Great traffic on the ex PRR Middle Division and the fishing is usually good too.
Also I used to like the Black Rock Tunnel on the Reading's main line. That is near Phoenixville PA. The trains would exit the tunnel and immediately cross the Schuylkill River on a large concrete arch bridge.
When I lived in New York, I went up to Iona Island on the CSX River Line all the time. While I'm no angler, the area is very popular with local fishermen. The most I've ever been able to catch on my fishing outings are old tires, tree branches, a bridge pier, my uncles waders and other assorted junk.

As a kid we used to fish a hole by the PRR Bridge over Mill creek by Clark Center IL, we camped there too. The fishing hole disappeared of the dammed the creek upstream and no floodwaters to kept cleaned out.

Ahhhh, the college memories! Crankin' Motley Crue in the dorms while gettin' ready to hit the strip. Then it's over to Kelly's as the first stop for a pitcher, then on to either The Whiskey Run or The Horse's A** once we figured the females were sufficiently alcoholed to make me and my buddies look human. Or maybe we'd head downtown to Mable Murphy's along the old SOO main if we wanted a more "upscale" atmosphere, and to get turned-down by a higher-class of bimbo. Then it was the long stagger back to the dorms with a stop at Mars' Hamburgers on the way to cure the gin & tonic-induced munchies. How I do feel old nowadays.
Back to the point: Even though I don't fish, I have been to Pewaukee Lake on the old MILW main northwest of Milwaukee (now CP) where numerous advertising photos were taken of Hiawatha service to the Twin Cities. It's still a great spot for photography.

Been there, done that. Great Memorial Day vacation. Good emergence of Sulfur Mayfly and if your lucky, a Green Drake hatch. Constant trains, just couldn't convince the OM to go there more often. Just downstream at Alexandra at the bridge as awesome, Parking in between the mainlines was eye popping.
Along the Yough River between Connellsville and Smithton during spring season of trout would get you good action on the old B&O now Chessie. Lots of great memories, makes you feel old.

There are lots of farm ponds adjacent to railroads here in the midwest. I enjoy fishing more than watching trains...put a good pond, lake, or river next to a railroad and I am very happy. My local fishing spot is near the CN mainline in Valparaiso, but I cannot see the trains.
The bluegills are pretty active and it is not uncommon to catch 50 to 100 in a couple of hours (with my sons). Pretty tasty.
Nearly every train photo i see with a lake or river makes me wonder about the fishing.

Mars' changed to be Rocky Roccocco's my senior year at UW-O I think it was - those rectangular slices of thick-crust pizza weren't bad either.
This may be more for the MR forum, but thinking of this re-ignited an idea I had to model one of the WC's SD45s in the old "green-beanie" ex-BN paint for my N scale layout. I saw them all the time rolling through Oshkosh when I lived there 5 years after college. Never thought much of them at the time, but now I miss seeing those beasts tying-up traffic on Algoma Blvd.
I have many spots, hunting and fishing. For fishing I have the NS's Bessemer-Mobile line, the tracks are about 10 yards from the lake. Then there is another lake right beside NS's AGS. And finally, where I work at on the Forkland Springs Catfish Farm the shortlline Alabama and Gulf Railway Borders one whole side of our property. For hunting, we have 2 greenfield associated close to the tracks and hunting from a legal distance, the trains are still clearly visible. And one day, a train went into emergency and stopped on a firelane where it pops out on the tracks, the same one I was looking over.
