Prosperity will kill CSX....The physical plan is sized for a Depression Level of traffic....If we truly have an economic recovery in the US (and W's math and John Snow's theivery make that unlikely) an increase in business will bury the CSX physical plant.. The terminals have been downsized to be mere shadows of their former status. Holding trains out of the major terminals is chronic. They run 9000 foot trains on territory with 7000 foot sidings and wonder why there are problems. Remote control T crews produce about 60 to 70% of the former T&E staffed crew and even when a T crew is replaced, grudgingly, with a T&E crew the moral of the work force is so bad that the T&E crew only produces to the level of the T crew. Maintenance on Locomotovies, cars, track and signals is being cut to the point that line of road Engine failures and car failures are rampant. Let the tempurature change 20 degrees and you are faced with either broken rails, pull-a-parts, or sun kinked tracks. Signals go red in the face of trains with regularity.

What a way to run a railroad.!

There you go! Bottom line is: Make change. Allow it to happen. Evaluate. If it's ok, let it go. If it's not, see if you REALLY need to fix it, or just give it a little more time. Etc.

The two year thing is very true. Unfortunately all too many people want good ol' instant gratification.

Case in point is TV. "In the beginning" a TV show was allowed to run its course. If it was a stinker, we got stuck with a stinker all season. Some shows, though, didn't really come into their own until later in the season. The result - some shows we still remember. (Unfortunately my TV history isn't good enough that I can cite the shows). Nowadays, if a show isn't in the top 10 from the get-go, it's cancelled sooner rather than later. One and two episode runs are not unheard of.

I can't speak for CSX at any level. But one has to wonder if a return on the next quarterly statement, not the one two years hence, is what they hold as goals. Managers at all levels are undoubtedly under the gun to produce results. Whether the end result justifies the means remains to be seen - in about two years.

Gee - let me guess, the senior level beancounters and the other Wall Street trash in upper management are not really railroaders and are immune from having their paychecks threatened? Theory is one thing, actual practice is quite another. Change, properly managed, is a good thing.

Joe: Time will tell if the "experiment" at Findlay works or fails. If the experiment fails, good management will go back to something that works or try something else. Bad management will ignore the obvious.

Old rule of thumb was that it might take up to two years for changes in management or plant to start showing benefits. What you do not want is a constantly revolving door driven by management looking for short term instant gratification. (those folks being the aforementioned Wall Street Trash) There are plenty of good management railroaders at CSX, thequestion is are they being listened to?

Yes. Fred Frailey in his article in "Overrated?Underrated in the January, 2004 Trains suggested John Snow was overrated as a railroad CEO. I agree, but for another reason. Under John Snow's watch the FRA took CSX to task for its poor safety record, and John Snow was surprised and clueless. However, I don't see any evidence its safety record is improving under current management. Nevertheless CXS will survive because it may be the only train in town in some cases, and its route structure for a comparable journey may be shorter than Norfolk Southern's.

We'll see a savings on paper from closing down a facility. The losses in productivity can be blamed on the worker bees. "I" get an award. Looks good to me...[:-^]

Oh, my answer to if CSX can survive with bad management?? NO!!! CSX would eventually get swallowed up by another R.R. But, hopefully some internal restructuring will help.

Well, I can tell you firsthand that CSX is making more cuts in management. I don't really know who, when, where, but I do know of one guy who did need to go. He was an assistant superintendent who came in and decided to shake things up. He butted into the yardmasters' moves, trainmaster's work, etc and made everydody's life a big pain. Let's just say our yard was becoming a bottleneck on the CSX system, we almost lost one of our biggest customers, Bunge Mills over his "improvements". Let's just say that he got reassigned and will most likely fall in with the chunk of management getting "relayered". All I gotta say is things are much better and we'll do anything to make sure that guy doesn't come back.[bow] But anyways, he is probably an example of why CSX has problems, and if more 'em get the boot, maybe I'll still have a job on down the line. [:D] But, this is a common phrase given to me by the veterans "the railroad makes money in spite of itself" and I truly do belive that! Imagine if railroads were managed to their potential, now that would be something to see!
