1st gen still going?
Posted by broncoman on Saturday, March 6, 2004 1:08 AM
Was wondering if anyone has seen in active service, any SD7s, 9s, 18s, or 24s. Preferrable high nose. I have a bet with a friend, and believe that there are still a number of them out there.

Thanks,
Dave

Tell you friend to pay up. Portland and Western has four SD-9 in daily service. I think they are all high nose as EMD intended.

BNSF still has some SD9's in service, mostly in yard and transfer service, although some have been pressed into road duty due to a power shortage.

The former US Steel roads (B&LE, DM&IR, EJ&E, BS & Union) still have some SD9's and SD18's in service. Some were rebuilt for DM&IR and are designated SD-M's.

The ex-UP and ex-SR SD24's that were rebuilt by IC (SD20) and PNC (SD18m) have been scattered to several carriers, including IHB and WSOR.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Correctomundo my friend. BNSF does indeed have a number of SD9 units still in service and I see them from time to time here in Aurora, IL in the Eola yard (one even in Heritage I paint scheme). Once in a rare while, we will even see one or two in mainline service and only once (hold onto your hat), I saw one with two SD70MAC units on a loaded coal train (and YES, it was pulling hard). Ex-BN SD-9's common at Denver's Globeville Yard....including the chopnosed one that spent a large part of it's life on the Leadville branch before it was sold.

Shortline Iowa Northwestern has one of the ex-SR, then Indiana RR SD-10's with the Alco trucks...DM&E's herd of SD-10, 18's has been scattered, one of which showed-up on the Whitewater Valley RR in Indiana still in Milwaukee paint. Colorado Kansas & Pacific has 4 ex-SP units...

I am in Greentree, PA, and this week I saw a highnose at the Rook Yard. The engine was quite a fur piece in the distance, but I do believe it was a "AC&Y(or maybe V)" it was a black and orange paint scheme, similar to Wheeling & Lake Erie.
