Why is it called a "barf bonnet"?  Does it induce nausea?

Photographically, 9647 is barf indeed!

But, I actually saw it parked at a Midwest terminal once, and it actually looked good!

Is 9647 still around? If he is, where is he at right now, because I have not seen any new pictures of him?

SoapBox

Not being a 'Professional Railfan'Whistling  I'd take a different tact. I always thought that the various paint schemes that the BN-SF has morphed thru as it went from Frisco to BN to BNSF were very interesting excercises as they sought to find an identity that would allow them to be instaneously identifiable to the ingterested public.

And further they give their Operating Employees something to key on when they're parked their Locomotives on another railroad's property, so they could leave in the correct power. My very favorite is the Haverty reincarnation of the 'Warbonnet' paint scheme. Thanks to Lionel and American Flyer, instaneously identifiable as being Santa Fe.

Which is why I am complaining. I wish they would repaint the remaining SD-60's back into the Warbonnet or virtuyally any other corporate paint scheme.  Most of those have been patched into new number sequences and the remaining paint jobs look like they have been played with by the kids, in their sandboxes for the last few years. The paint is peeling, generally skinned up and mostly a mess. They reswemble survivors in a demolition derby.  Now they are Barf Bonnets" Banged Head

The Biggest reason 9647 was called the Barf Bonnet was they took the Best Scheme IMO the Red and Sliver Warbonnet and then appiled the Green and Cream of Greinstein to the same Pattern.  Then put Blue and red stripes on it with blue and Red letters.  It was like the guy who came up on it was HIGH ON LSD AND MARIJUNIA AT THE SAME TIME.  Almost like the Platypus.

Always at war with those that think OTR trucking is EASY.

I've seen pictures of these "barf bonnets" before and I can only say one thing.

The original AT&SF executive who gave the final go ahead to use the red and silver "War Bonnet" scheme must be spinning in his grave.

This paint job is truly a disappointment and a dishonor to what was the finest paint scheme in RR history.

Bruce:

The original WarBonnet paint scheme, was I think a product of EMD art department, I am sorry, but I cannot recall the actual gentleman's name who created it right now.

It was Michael Haverty who was at Santa Fe when the merger with BN took place who resurected the War Bonnet paint scheme. He is now with Kansas City Southern and I surmise, may be in part responsible, for that wonderful recreation of the 'Southern Belle' paint scheme no worn by KCS and KCSdeM locomotives- which in my opinion beats the heck out of that Gray with red letters that used to be the standard there. My 2 cents

It's not the paint job:  it's the "Jimmy Junk" under the paint.  Lucky it had a GE to push it out of town!

Actually, that's an EMD behind it.  70Ace I believe.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.
