Bad News for Folkston Fans
Posted by GP-9_Man11786 on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 5:41 PM

Here's a bit of bad news for those heading to Folkston, GA to railfan: I-95 is under contruction for 32 miles in the middle of the state. The road is being widened to three lanes in each direction and I've heard it's causing very bad traffic snarls. I work in the South Carolina Welcome Center and hear load of complaints.

The good news is there's a way around the mess. You can take Exit 67, whihc is US 17 headed south. It loops you back onto I-95 just south of the construction. Going north the exit to take is 29.

Hope this is of some use.

I've tried it and it works.

You can also make use of Federal Rte. 301.  It is a little slower than an interstate, of course, but runs well.  When we last left Folkston, having been burned by I-95 on the way down, we took U.S. 301 from Folkston thru Nahunta and Jesup to U.S. 84 near Hinesville (that route is four-laned).  It took us right to I-95.  It was also our mission to AVOID ATLANTA! and we did so.   -  a. s.
