Traction motor don't turn the main generator. In dynamics, the main generator is essentially disconnected. The momentum of the train turns the wheels, the wheels are directly geared to the traction motors, the traction motors turn, generating electricity which is forced through resistance grids (really heavy duty toaster or blow dryer heating elements). Forcing the electricity through the resistance grids, generates heat and fans blow air over the grids to cool them.
