OvermodI created a new account as a test, and had no trouble selecting and uploading an avatar -- even the automatic scale and resize worked.
Well, I just took the bait, and tried. Still getting stonewalled with no avatar, but at least I get a [create a new discussion] button.
Imaginative name, huh?
