But aren't most cows - female - hornless or their horns are just nubs? Steers have horns, bulls have horns - even Millie has a horn. Altho - somewhere in the back of the attic - isn't their a breed that the cows (female) have horns as well.

I think there are some breeds which are hornless; all we had on the farm were black angus or guernseys, and if I remember correctly, the guernseys were hornless.

As to the nub part, I think I remember Daddy having the vet cut a cow's horns to nubs one
time. I was REAL little at the time (age wise, since at 51 1/2 I'm only 4' 7" ) There might be several breeds of cows who have horns. Like the old Texas Longhorns, I believe, the
cows also had horns.

A westbound KCS gen Manifest train loaded hit a milk tanker headon
there was a 4'x6' piece of 1/4 inch stainless stell imbeded on the nose of one of the last white KCS locos you could see the impression of the rotating headlights through the metal the train hit the trailer at 50 MPH no one was hurt except the truck driver when he told his wife (honey I got fired for loosing the milk lets go have sex ) the rig wasnt hurt at all the train moved 15 miles to the next siding till MofW crews arrived and pulled the sheet metal off the nose and a nother loco was brought in to take the train to Dallas[8D]

Today a cow catcher would be called an "animal rights enhancement device" and be required by some goofy federal law called the "moo cow preservation act of 2004" sponsored by some equally goofy congressman named Joe Porkbarrel.[:-,][:p]

I was watching a tape on Railroad history, and the first "cow catchers" were steel spikes attached to the pilot on the locomotive. (I am dead serious, I thought it was crazy too!) If the crew hit a cow they would have already found their meal for that day.

We have had 20 inches here in the city since 1/1 and Wed nite/Thur am - about another 7+ coming. We could send most of it to Ed to put in the Gulf! Cool things off a little down there -

No wonder we haven't seen your name much on the forum. Wish we could send all the
COLD, ICE, SLEET, FREEZING RAIN & SNOW to Mexico, or South America, or somewhere they don't see snow. Think EVERYBODY is getting tired of the stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As of today, mid 60s, low was 32 this morning.
Clear blue skies, north wind up to 8 mph.
Shucks, we had frost on our cars when I got up, but was working in tee shirts by this afternoon.
Life in the swamp can be soooo good.

I think all of Mookie's snow and sleet got hung up on a barbed wire fence in Oaklahoma.
Tomorrow is my friday, might just do ribs on the barbie....

HIss Boo - I understand Houston not having tons of snow - but Indiana! You really should be sharing in this mess -

I will probably not be here tomorrow - no cheering please! We are getting about another 8-10 and have a snowplow parked not too far from the house, ready to bring it all over to us!

Ed - will take a plate of those ribs right here! Matt - chocolate cake and then let it snow!

...Jen, Indiana is famous for getting some cold spells in the heart of Winter but down here in the central part of the state...deep snow is not one of our strong suits. The northern edge of the state next to the lake is prone to much lake effect snow and they can get the deep stuff but normally not here....but I'm sure you folks out there can handle that stuff. Being a Pennsylvania native, I too am very familar what deep snow and Winter can be....

Snow? What's that? Syracuse is only on track for a record year (over 120"). The lake effect event last week left up to 6' in some areas. One small town (Fulton) has over 180" in the book so far this year. I have about 18" in the back yard right now (the driveway just has some slu***he snowblower didn't catch).

Still have gas for the snow blower - bring on the snow!

Sister Jen, I don't envy you at all! You get dumped on, and every time it's supposed to come this way it fizzles out and we don't get to share in your misfortune. Not that I want to! Last night they were forecasting three inches of snow behind an icy mixture for Thursday...now they're saying "maybe an inch".

However, I can sympathize with your problems with the plow. And once they put it in your driveway, the sooner you get it out, the better! Our friendly plow operators also manage to cover up the crosswalk that the school kids need to use, yet don't get within two feet of the drains that would take care of the runoff.

We don't get much lake-effect snow on our side of Lake Michigan, but it does happen. And there have been many times when I've been sitting in my tower at work (there...the railroad connection, for people who need it!), admiring the lovely cloud bank to the east and listening to the reports of Lake and Porter counties getting dumped on!

Thanks Mook!

3 inches of snow this morning and more on the way! The news last night was full of warnings about water rationing coming in March for Denver and its 'burbs....Sounds like mother nature was on an acid trip in eastern Nebraska.

Mookie and MC
If it makes you feel any better, we have 6-10 inches on the ground in my neck of the woods (far enough east of Lake Michigan to miss most lake effect snow) and this was after it rained (mostly freezing) or we would have more. The snow's not too bad, but the rain froze on the plowed roads and the wind drifts more snow so we end up with ice/snow mixed. My driveway is now covered in 2-3inches of ice. The schools have been closed for 2 days now..Main roads are OK, but side roads are dangerous.

ok - back to my [2c] - I know east of us somewhere they have had a lot of snow. However, we have no mountains, no lake effect snow - only lake we have is Oak Lake and it is only the size of a good parking lot; no nothing! So why pick on us - only thing I can think of is we have Colorado and Kansas snugged up next to us! Maybe that is the problem.....hmmm -

....And Jen you are getting that cool clean but snowy Canadian snow carried down across your area with the blowing jet stream. Lake effect or whatever we all have to have some part of it...We, in this part of the layout just happen to get by with about 2 ft. of the stuff in a whole normal season. Makes it easier on the railroad travel....There I worked that word in too for anyone that cares.....
