I hope mudchicken's not making fun of Nebraska. It may be in the "middle of nowere", but if your talking trainwise we have the largest classifacation yard in the world! And UP triple track main. We haven't had alot of snow for a couple years because were in a drought. - Duh. But we've had over 15 inches in the last 2 weeks. And Mookie, were are you from?

Nah, I doubt it. Those early American 4-4-2s even went on 40 MPH in some areas of western railroads. Any kind of big animal would probably be dragged inder the locomotive and die instently.

The final tally here was about two inches of nice, shovelable stuff, without the freezing drizzle they had expected to glaze it. As I was afraid of, work was not fun, with certain cars not behaving. I hope things have dried up a bit for me today.

There is a little moisture in this one - preceeds the actual snow. But so far, knock, knock - it has been very light. Will increase with daylight, but they downgraded us to 3-5. This is the same source that said it would arrive Wed nit and all day Thursday, too! [banghead]

Well, that is what it finally ended up looking like, but a few years back - they had a real ski slope up by the Platte River - where the "bluff"s are - NebraSKI - dumb idea, but they did it anyway! Then it quit snowing. They used artificial for awhile, but I think eventually they just turned it back to nature.

Oh - I am here and it is Thursday morning - we did get a dusting overnite and maybe 3-5 today -but we can handle that. This one came more from the 4 corners and Colo - instead of straight from Ed - and come to think of it - there WERE a few feathers on the drive this morning - Total to date about 21-25 inches - depends on where in the city you stand. Front yard is - well over my head and I am taller than Cherokee Woman!

Well, now our "maybe an inch" has been changed to a Winter Storm Watch, with the possibility of 5-8 inches of wonderful white stuff beginning tomorrow noon.

This will be enough to cause switch and retarder problems at work, and make highways miserable for the commutes both ways for me.

....And Jen you are getting that cool clean but snowy Canadian snow carried down across your area with the blowing jet stream. Lake effect or whatever we all have to have some part of it...We, in this part of the layout just happen to get by with about 2 ft. of the stuff in a whole normal season. Makes it easier on the railroad travel....There I worked that word in too for anyone that cares.....

ok - back to my [2c] - I know east of us somewhere they have had a lot of snow. However, we have no mountains, no lake effect snow - only lake we have is Oak Lake and it is only the size of a good parking lot; no nothing! So why pick on us - only thing I can think of is we have Colorado and Kansas snugged up next to us! Maybe that is the problem.....hmmm -

If it makes you feel any better, we have 6-10 inches on the ground in my neck of the woods (far enough east of Lake Michigan to miss most lake effect snow) and this was after it rained (mostly freezing) or we would have more. The snow's not too bad, but the rain froze on the plowed roads and the wind drifts more snow so we end up with ice/snow mixed. My driveway is now covered in 2-3inches of ice. The schools have been closed for 2 days now..Main roads are OK, but side roads are dangerous.

3 inches of snow this morning and more on the way! The news last night was full of warnings about water rationing coming in March for Denver and its 'burbs....Sounds like mother nature was on an acid trip in eastern Nebraska.

Sister Jen, I don't envy you at all! You get dumped on, and every time it's supposed to come this way it fizzles out and we don't get to share in your misfortune. Not that I want to! Last night they were forecasting three inches of snow behind an icy mixture for Thursday...now they're saying "maybe an inch".

However, I can sympathize with your problems with the plow. And once they put it in your driveway, the sooner you get it out, the better! Our friendly plow operators also manage to cover up the crosswalk that the school kids need to use, yet don't get within two feet of the drains that would take care of the runoff.

We don't get much lake-effect snow on our side of Lake Michigan, but it does happen. And there have been many times when I've been sitting in my tower at work (there...the railroad connection, for people who need it!), admiring the lovely cloud bank to the east and listening to the reports of Lake and Porter counties getting dumped on!

Snow? What's that? Syracuse is only on track for a record year (over 120"). The lake effect event last week left up to 6' in some areas. One small town (Fulton) has over 180" in the book so far this year. I have about 18" in the back yard right now (the driveway just has some slu***he snowblower didn't catch).

Still have gas for the snow blower - bring on the snow!

...Jen, Indiana is famous for getting some cold spells in the heart of Winter but down here in the central part of the state...deep snow is not one of our strong suits. The northern edge of the state next to the lake is prone to much lake effect snow and they can get the deep stuff but normally not here....but I'm sure you folks out there can handle that stuff. Being a Pennsylvania native, I too am very familar what deep snow and Winter can be....

I will probably not be here tomorrow - no cheering please! We are getting about another 8-10 and have a snowplow parked not too far from the house, ready to bring it all over to us!

....Ed it sounds like Jen is really getting blasted with severe winter stuff....We've been pretty lucky...Have just had about a week of severe cold including one of minus 11 but not too much snow around here...Probably a max of 7" here all season so far. Our avg. for a season is abuot 26". Tomorow we will see some sunshine. Enjoy your barbie...!

As of today, mid 60s, low was 32 this morning.
Clear blue skies, north wind up to 8 mph.
Shucks, we had frost on our cars when I got up, but was working in tee shirts by this afternoon.
Life in the swamp can be soooo good.

I think all of Mookie's snow and sleet got hung up on a barbed wire fence in Oaklahoma.
Tomorrow is my friday, might just do ribs on the barbie....
