There is a cable car that runs up the hill from the Visitors Center at Horseshoe Curve to the top park area. The Visitors Center is a nice place to check out.

You can watch main line action from a rocking chair on the front porch. Owner/host Mr. Tom Davis can provide you with a wealth of information about railfanning the area.

Lilly, Cassandra, and South Fork are all good locations.

If you're in the Altoona area, the Brickyard is a nice spot.

If you go to Johnstown, visit the inclined plane and ride it up to the top of the mountain for a spectacular view of the city.

As for Horseshoe Curve, if you have never been there, by all means go.
I for one wi***hat 1)the excess vegetation on the Curve would be removed asap, and 2) that the Curve was open to visitors year round.

The Curve is open year round, but the visitors center and funicular are closed during that time.

Replying to Bakerson, the hotels in the area are plentiful, there is a Motel 6, a Holliday Inn Express with computers in every room, a Hampton Inn, and a Days Inn. Plus, there are many other places to sleep. Hungry? Restaurants are everywhere! There is even a restaurant called R-Waffle King that has a menu devoted to the Pennsy and a G scale train running along the room. Plus, there are several other restaurants, including the regular Burger King McDonalds thing, plus a Papa John's pizza place, Pizza Hut, and the world famous (Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Virginia only) Sheetz.
