Service Bulletin - Winter Weather Alert
January 14, 2004

A Level 3 winter weather alert is in effect between Buffalo, N.Y. and Boston,
Mass, and between Syracuse, N.Y., and Montreal, PQ because of extreme cold and
wind chill.

The Level definitions are listed below for reference:
Level 1 - Substantial inclement weather conditions are being encountered (or are
expected imminently) within the specified region. Scheduled service and traffic
connections will be maintained as practical to the situation.
Level 2 - Adverse weather conditions have affected the specified region.Local
switching, scheduled service and normal traffic connections will be affected.
Level 3 - Adverse weather conditions have severely affected the specified
region. Only critical trains will be operated. Trains will operate on straight
move and limit use of crossover moves to the extent practical. Local switching,
scheduled service, and normal traffic connections will definitely be affected.

You can also help us serve you safely by doing the following:
Keep the switch points clear of snow and ice so that the switch can be operated
safely.

Keep the area around the switch stand clear of snow and ice.

Clean walkway areas where the crews may need to access the facility or cars
during service.

Make sure that close clearance signs are free of snow and clearly visible for
the switching crews.

I have been in -31 below F - you do function - your car will start if it has been properly cared for - or not if it hasn't. Furnace has been out for a week (power outage - bad snowstorm in middle Oct.) - you survive, altho the dog darn near got a hernia trying to sleep between her master and mistress and have only tried not to "go" in the wind, not the cold.

Twenty-seven below at the house at 7 am today, saw -35 on the truck thermometer on the way in to work. Heard one report of -40.

Gas doesn't gel, although if there's water in the tank you can have some problems. Diesel will gel if it's not treated. Not usually an issue unless something has been parked since warm weather.

My truck started fine this AM, although it was in the garage. Still, if it's up to snuff, it'll usually start just fine.

The furnace does shut off (unless you have air leaks, like an old window). A cold windy day is actually worse than a still cold. Another problem is that usually when it's this cold, it's also very dry - hence the constant presence of the humidifier this time of year.

I've fought fires at -50. Everything freezes - you have to keep the water in motion at all times and even then it's not enough. It's no fun trying to move a 50' length of fire hose that's solid as a rock.

During a cold snap last week I heard CSX dealing with several pull aparts, so I'd have to say that's a problem, too.

Eventually it all goes away, the flowers bloom, the leaves come out, we can swim in the lakes and rivers. One thing about living in the north country - there's always something new coming down the pike. Even the first snow can be enjoyable (until you find yourself in a ditch...)

Here in lovely England tonight it is a wonderful -1 C.... today it reached a high of 6 C out of the wind with a windchill factor of 2 C. Try scrambling around on the East Coast Main Line trying to repair a failed class 66 when it is snowing with 125 mph trains screaming past only 6 feet away and your hands have gone numb so you cannot re-tighten the blead valves on the brake cylinders..... GRRRRRRR!!!!!!! Damned GM junk piles! Bring back the class 58! Proper British engineering!

I've lived in Central and Southern Indiana(indianapolis and Bloomfield), East Texas(Kilgore) and now Northeastern Illinois (Chicagoland). They each have a special place in my heart and their own unique weather. No matter how cold it gets Chicago is my favorite place when it comes to climate. Its not as miserably hot and humid (not to mention the bugs)in the summer as Texas was and there are considerably fewer tornadoes than in Indiana or Texas. [xx(] Besides if I get cold I put on more clothes. If I get hot there is only so much I can take off legally! (and believe me you should be glad about that!)[;)]
