There's just something about that SD45 in the WC/CN shot that just captures your imagination. The contrast in the shot is excellent, with the dark to light drawing in the viewer's attention. The headlights seem to have a somewhat "smokey" appearance which itself is unusual. While the other shot of the long "modern" CN train is excellent, this view of an old SD45, perhaps in her last days in service, just seems to fit the feeling of the fall season conveyed in this picture.
Well done!
Another difficult choice. Both shots were interesting, but there was something attactive (to me) about the #1 (modern CN) photo. After looking at the results thus far, either I missed something in the WC shot, or 75% of the participants didn't see what I did in #1.
Anyhow, another great pair. Thanks for keeping this competition going. I look forward to each new series.

I found the choice very tough; often the work of one of these two great photographers stands out , but here we have two excellent shots. I went with No. 1, partly because of the lighting, partly because the shot from above emphasized the "great outdoors". And the other track off to the left was a nice touch. Picture two had the rails to the right of the loco, and the signal in the distance to the right. But the telephoto effect was a little overdone..I think for me, that was the difference

I chose the second photo as well. I liked the depth of color in the second shot , as well as the exhaust plume, which conveys the action of the scene. But its funny, if you just go off the unenlarged photos, I would have picked number one.

....This segment I must vote for photo #2. I realize the sun is on the "wrong" side of the train.....and it's back lit to a certain degree.....and those are conditions I don't necessarily condem to my liking.
The scene has more dramatic railroad content.....The shiny rails trailing off in the distance shows it is an important main line of operation. Kind of "tells a story", this is a busy double track operation.
Photo #1 is a nice photo of a typical railroad scene. I'm not condeming it at all.....just think the first photo is a more dramatic shot.

While I am more of a "WC" fan than a "CN" fan, I must vote for photo #1 (taken at Van Dyne, WI perhaps?). Lots of train, nice scenery, good exposure.
Although, IMHO, both images are a bit on the 'cool' side, the WC seems a bit too 'cool' for me (note the washed-out signal indication).

An extremely tough choice, but I went with photo #2.
I prefer the way the lighting in photo 2 plays with the scenery. The light seems a little too sharp for me in #1.

It would appear that I was the first to vote this time--as of this moment, Photo 2 has a 100-percent lead. As usual, I can't say why that photo spoke more to me--they both had green in them, both freight trains, both diesel, probably both in Wisconsin (where along the ex-CNW WC was the CN shot taken, and what's the parallel railroad--more WC?).
'Twas a hard decision, but I'll stick with it. I did like the lighting on the wires in the WC shot.
