books by Linda Grant Niemann
Posted by Capitalrail on Friday, September 22, 2006 10:33 AM

I am wondering if anyone is aware of the titles of the books that Linda Grant Niemann has written about her career working on the railroad for Southern Pacific/Union Pacific. An article in last months TRAINS was written by her, however the author's blurb at the conclusion of the article did not mention the titles of her books.

Thanks.

On the Rails: A Woman's Journey

Boomers Railroad Memoirs

Railroad Voices-Linda Niemann and Lina Bertucci

Until I looked, I wasn't aware of Boomers Railroad Memoirs, but I've read the other two and enjoyed her experienced look at railroading, someone who actually knew what they were talking about!

From what I've read, "On the Rails" is a retitled reissue of "Boomer: Railroad Memoirs".  "Boomer" is out of print but easily available at amazon.com, abebooks, alibris, etc.  "Railroad Voices" is still in print & available at amazon, but there are used copies at all three sites.

The only copy of "On the Rails" I saw on a brief search had an asking price of $89!!!  Pretty outrageous for a paperback reissue.

I highly recommend her books also.

Boomer can be found for under $2 at abebooks.com.  There are more expensive copies on up to $30.

Railroad Voices for about $35-$60.

On the Rails shows 1 copy for $89.98.

I read Boomer.  I always look forward to finding her articles in TRAINS.

I enjoyed reading her account of working in the Southern Pacific yards, trying to get the given work done while dealing with an abusive yardmaster know as "the buddah." That was in a Trains issue from a couple of years ago.
From here to there, and back again.

Hi;
New to this forum but I might have to subscribe to this Mag if they publish Linda Niemann writings. I don't think anyone has the grasp of what goes on with actual railroading movements as this author (Keroac? A total donkey!) She would have made an excellent yardmaster (yes they have a few good ones!).

You're not required to subscribe to a Kalmbach train-oriented periodical but I think you'll have more fun if you do.  TRAINS itself is available at a good discount over single-copy cost.  You might also consider CLASSIC TRAINS.  - al s.  ("al-in-chgo")
