This is a topic that comes up frequently and I recently found a link on the BofLE site with a nice summary.

Also, for those who perhaps want to experience the right hand seat for a day there are a number of programs around the country that can help you out on different locomotives. Here's a good link for a partial list.

Streach them; widen the handle; reach for 8 (or 16 in some cases)
