I believe that CSX has allocated numbers 5200-5399 on their locomotive roster for their ES44-DC's. I spotted #5389 hustling Q11029 thru St. Joe, Indiana on 29 June. Just curious. Does anyone know of a higher GEVO number now on CSX property?

An even more interesting question, how many regional Class 2 railroads have modern state of the art locomotives as opposed to older used SD40-2 vintage EMDs?

NS has GEVO's numbered from 7500-7564 with reports of another 100 to be added to this.

CSX has ES44DCs. BNSF has ES44ACs. NS has ES40DCs. And UP has ES44ACs. There might be more.

Is it just me or do the GEVO's heavily resemble the Dash 9's outward apperance?

I think every class one has fuel efficient engines. All of them have either an SD70ACe, or SD70M-2, and all but KCS have the GE eveloution series.

The CSX 5200s and 5300s do not have the "steerable" trucks that the earlier engines had. Also, that "lightning bolt" painted on the side of a CSX engine denotes an AC traction motor; the 5200/5300 are DC so they don't have that.

These engines do not perform as well as the earlier AC engines, besides the lower horsepower (4400 vs 6000), the DC traction motor system seems to take forever to "load up," both for accelerating and for dynamic braking. Combined with the old-style conventional control stand (vs the "desktop" control stand on other road units), these new units are not as popular with the engineers as older units. But, hey, they are more efficient, and they are replacing the older "musclecars" on many New England runs.

BNSF- 88 ES44DC's and 365 ES44AC's
UP- 306 or so ES44AC's
NS- 165 ES40DC's
CSX- 200 ES44DC's
CN- 50 ES44DC's
CPR- 140 ES44AC's
KCSM- Getting 30 ES44AC's

I made a quick count of the quantities in my head. They may not be exactly correct but are close. Includes units that are on order.

Your count for CP is a bit high, they actually have 61 ES44ACs. The 30 ES44ACs on order are for KCS proper not their Mexican subsidiary KCSM.

Concerning CP- The first order for 60 has been completed, and now an order for 80 more has been placed, 8760-8839. Thats why I wrote "includes units that are on order".
Concerning KCS- The 30 ES44AC's are for KCSM, not KCS. KCS is getting more SD70ACe's. http://www.trains.com/Content/Dynamic/Articles/000/000/006/729gbowv.asp
