Worst looking paint scheme in my opinion, alot of people hate me for this opinion, is the Santa Fe red & silver warbonnet. Blue & yellow is okay but red & silver is UGLY! To modifly NS Railfan's statement, if I were in charge of paint at BNSF, all of the red & silver units would be gone by the end of the year.
Ok, start the flaming!

yohandiesel: I'd be a little more inclined to understand your viewpoint, if I understood just what it is you're trying to say(and to who). Do you care to elaborate? I'm confused.

One of the problematic paint schemes was the Seaboard System Locomotive color scheme. The Ends of the Locomotives were supposed to be painted High-Visibility Colors. The tiny emblem did not work to enhance visibilty. After the Seaboard Merger, CSX repeated the problem for 5 more years. The Seaboard and CSX people did not consider grade crossing and switching visibility when they chose the color placement. Headlights are not enough on a stealthy gray locomotive, unless there are two pairs of Low-Mounted Flashing lights.

NYC and Penn Central basic flat black scheme was apparently meant to get no attention. The flat black did a great job at hiding all the dirt and details of the locomotives from a distance.

Canadian National and Illiniois Central Freight Cars that have White Lettering on Light Gray Backgrounds or Black Lettering on Dark Gray Backgrounds. They need more color contrast for markings like the logos and the road numbers.

The 1967 ILLINOIS CENTRAL scheme needed a Small Black stripe between the Orange and White. Orange and White must never touch because it is visually disturbing.

I'm not too fond of the MBTA commuter rail loco scheme - it looks like a reverse Atlantic coast line scheme. And they never get the purple right on models......

The Shade of Orange on Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Locomotives was way too dark. Thankfully they were merged totally out of that scheme in the early 1980's. Monochrome paint schemes do not visually work very well on Locomotives.

A one-color scheme appears to be economical on freight cars, but Locomotives need 3 contrasting colors since they are the power of the train.

Penn Central Green/teal is the worst, with CSX "Stealth" grey livery, a close second. The CSX units painted in "Stealth" just look unfinished... As if they ran out of paint before being able to complete the job.

It was a cost-cutting measure, that when applied, didn't look bad when fresh. Yeah, it was kinda boring...but the same could be said for Conrail's solid blue with "can opener" logo. BTW, why is it that nobody is slamming the final years of PRR schemes? I've seen a few photos of units with no lettering at all...just keystones on the cab sides. At least PC's FL9s were colorful. Too bad the yellow paint usually faded to a nasty off-white. http://pc.smellycat.com/pics/equip/pc5024.jpg

There's something about he new BNSF SD70Ace's Orange that just kills me--You take MRL's Ace and compare it to BNSF and it is night and days difference on how good the Ace looks.

I kinda liked the maroon and yellow. Although the cherry red and yellow looks better. Blue and white is good too.

(Ahem) That's ACL purple. Ugly enough to knock a buzzard off a gut-wagon. SAL's passenger livery was a funky dark green/cream/red stripe affair, not my favorite, but much better than ACL purple.
