My my. We do seem to be bashing Amtrak here... suppose it can't be helped; anything with that much political meddling is going to have problems. But, guys, we're trying -- at least the railroaders and our new president (of Amtrak, not the US, dummy) are.

As to least favourite railroad? No problem: Guilford Transportation. They have an arrogance with all concerned which has to be seen to be believed, and the way they treat the help isn't a crime, but should be.

Any railroad created as a pretense for aquiring the the railroad for the sole purpose of controlling who scraps it. (There are at least 4 out there right now). If there is any business out there to be had, they make sure it has been run off.

You and any potential shippers should contact the Surface Transportation Board if this is really happening, they will usually force the owners to sell the line to a firm who will actually run it, this is especially the case if the line has the potential of being viable, or if online communities are going to be impacted negatively ecconomically. There was company I think it was AKC materials that was buying viable lines to scrap and they are now banned from purchasing railroads.

These days, I see railroads as just a "generic" monopoly, that is wiping out all traces of its former self. Stack trains and lookalike unit coal trains don't make for a very good replacement for the unique "old" freights of the pre-1970's era. When was the last time you saw a boxcar with the owning railroads logo painted on the boxcar? These days all you get are some simple reporting marks, provided that they aren't covered in mindless gang graffitti.

In case you have forgotten, railroads are what we call a business. They are always looking for bigger and better options. Most cars today are leased any way so what do the Class 1's care if it does not have their name on it. Not trying to upset you. My favorite fell victim to the U.P. It's just that the railroads could not survive doing what you are talking about.

My least favorite railroad is the Union Pacific. I just think that they think that they are hot shots! If wasn't for Union Pacific, BNSF would be the largest railroad in the country. That's another reason that I don't like UP.

Two traditional railroads I never cared for were the N&W and theL&N.
I used to like UP because they used those great double diesels and the turbines.I really liked those long yellow streamliners, but they disappeared with Amtrak. When these were gone, I lost most of my interest in UP.Now I hate it because it took over my SP.They also took over many other roads. I love seeing thier trains running around with dirty grimy diesels when the traditional(pre 1982) UP kept its units clean.[}:)]

It has to be the Soo. Not just because they were awarded the Milwaukee Road (I'm a die hard fan), but because of the "rotten pumpkin" paint scheme that they promptly applied to the locomotives, and the no trespassing/no railfanning signs that were posted at the depots and yards after the take over. I got kicked out of the Portage (WI) depot where I went to try and take photos of Milwaukee Road equipment, and never really went back. It was much different in the Milwaukee days, when my Dad and I spent many hours wandering the entire Portage yard and knew most of the crews who ran through the area. All the proposed Soo/Milwaukee logos seemed to disappear right after the takeover as if the Milwaukee never existed.

They couldnt survive cause they dont know how[}:)] Dont worry they will survive right up to the point when no one invests in them anymore. So give me all the major players who screw over small shippers.Yes it does happen look at what Uncle Pete tried in iowa.Told small elevators 100 cars or else! So most have started trucking to IC/CN and IC&E!Thank God for shortlines!Funny how they can turn a profit in the loose car market.Maybe cause all the good managers left to go to them [}:)]

Yes we are on time but this is yesterdays train

RANT mode *ON
You could make the same statement about the highways. Seeing as how you object to subsidies and think subsidies are bad, why not get rid of the highway funds as well? and the FAA. we'd certainly see a lot more trains running around if we got rid of all those gov't boondoggles and money pits known as highways. They are never completely fixed
END RANT

Seriously, my least favorite RR? I can't think of any. I also share jesus1st's sentiments on Amtrak.

It's disappointing to find on an RR forum those who passionatly dislike certain trains, but, then, this is a free country where we are all entitled to our opinions. .

I can go by air almost anywhere at a better rate than by taking AMTRAK.

Have been to Seattle twice in the last year and could have went by air for $800.00 less than by AMTRAK in a Pullman.

Tom

OK, but you know that comparing trains & railroads to airlines and (taxpayer-subsidized) airports is like the proverbial apples-to-oranges comparison. Anyone with a computer can find a train fare that is less than an airfare, and vice versa. Long distance trains go not only from one major metro area to another, but also serve many intermediate municipalities with poor, or costly, or no air service at all. You try to get a ticket to some of the smaller airports, and then see what the price is. You also realize that many smaller airports are even more heavily subsidized than the air service at the large hubs - in some cases, each traveller going to a smaller airport is subsidized by the US taxpayer to the tune of 500 %! (Source: "Supertrains," by Joe Vranich). In addition, the walk-up fare for an Amtrak train is often much much less than the walk-up airfare.

Current: NS. Why? Because they are stupid inbreds.

Historical: N&W. Why? Because they were stupid inbreds.

Least Favorite Railfan: "Oldtimer" Why? Because he is a N&W loverboy, which makes him a stupid inbred also.

Enjoy bashing the NS while you can, because it is only a matter of time before they are eliminated by the next merger. Then all the inbreds that run the company will be sent packing to the trailer parks from which they crawled out of.

Look at the compund mallet thread. Our good friend, Mr. Hillbilly Oldtimer, was blabing on about how the trailer park trash N&W was such a superior railroad to everybody else, including the great UP. He wasted a lot of time making up statistics just to try and impress us on how the slowpoke Y6b was such a better locomotive than anything the UP had. He went on whining about how the N&W had it so tough with their 6 mile long, 1% grade. It would of be cheaper just to install conveyer belts from the mines. Of course, he just wasted our time, because railfans have alway known the N&W , and now NS, is worthless and run by morons.

Least favorite historical.....PC....never aimed a camera in their direction, not even for RS-1's and F7's and have not regretted it to this day.

Least Favorite overall.....Amtrack.....bottom line is we are subsidizing somehting that's time is LONG past. I don't see us subsidizing clipper ships or horse and buggy whip trails so why support Amtrack.

Conrail to some degree.......I understood the condition of the rails in the northeast in the 70's and the changing economic forces that would only make things worse so I understood it was a necessity. It did not make me hate it, I just ignored it, packed the camera up and went strictly to modeling.

Least favorite modern.....UP. Same reasons already listed here, plus I worked for them. They are arrogant and sinister to work for, and this is coming from a right of center, conservative republican so take it for what it's worth. Until UP I still had a love for the railroads, but by the time I left them I ahted trains so much I sold off my entire collection of books, models and antiques. It was not out of resentment, it wasa because I ended up loosing sight of everything I had liked about railroads and replacing it with frustration, anger and bad feelings.
