[:p] Say now, let' s not look the proverbial "Gift Horse" in the mouth. This effort was very classy of U.P. and I only wish more roads like BNSF would so honor their heritage roads in a similar way. Thanks U.P., for a really fine "gift" to us all.

Well, they didnt do it for the "heritage" . Its more of using it in court with the many trademark issues. They arent doing it to honor the past roads ill tell you that much. But like i said, its a nice change.

Think of them as more of a "tribute" design than a "classic" design. Perhaps, this is what MP and WP locomotives would look like if they weren't fallen flags.

Those units are sweet! Especially the Mopac one. They are a nice change from bland yellow/gray.

Shaun, that's correct- 8423 is the fourth primer unit, following 8379, 8383, and 8396. No one knows what scheme this one will be in though.

Talk about a company that will do anything to amke more money by doing this they can charge every model manufactor a copyright fee for making anything in any predeccesor scheme. Talk about a company going nuts to make a couple bucks.

Well, with the way they repainted and patched the old SP, MP, CNW(and the other's)units, they probably forgot what the original paint shcemes looked like.[:D][:P]

Okay, no more UP bashing for me.

BNSF has many BN and ATSF units untouched so at this point it wouldn't be necessary for them to have a few "tribute" engines

Not even close. The UP only did this because they want more money.

Maybe UP should paint the last locomotive in the Kodachrome scheme. They could then show it off to their western competitor, with a new logo-something along the lines of "UP-SP nanner-nanner" [;)]

UP is hoping to have 3 of the units there on Saturday for the unveiling.

These are NOT Military decorated units as some are speculating.

Hmm I wonder why no DRGW unit but one for SP . . .
"There is nothing in life that compares with running a locomotive at 80-plus mph with the windows open, the traction motors screaming, the air horns fighting the rush of incoming air to make any sound at all, automobiles on adjacent highways trying and failing to catch up with you, and the unmistakable presence of raw power. You ride with fear in the pit of your stomach knowing you do not really have control of this beast." - D.C. Battle [Trains 10/2002 issue, p74.]

According to what has been written at and on www. altamontpress.com/railnews, website for August 1,2005,there IS a DRGW locomotive that is to be painted, along with MP,WP,CNW,MKT,and the SP.From what I am guessing,UP is doing this so that they can get a licensing fee from anyone, whom is using any logo that is now part of the UP.Theres a lawsuit in the courts now about this,July 29,2005 news at altamontpress.com.Opionionly,if the UP thinks that this is going to favor for them in all court cases................2 words Union Pacific, [censored][censored] [banghead] it aint gonna work!!

Don't start counting all of your chickens before they all start to hatch. Just one Question id like to ask.......Just why is the Union Pacific the only one who is raving about this whole Licenceing thing anyway's? Why are the BNSF,NS and of all things the CSXT being all Quiet about all of this anyways? Why arn't they (BNSF,NS,CSXT)sturing the pot also? Allan.

I have one word to describe these two new units: AWESOME! I think they both look fabulous and that whoever designed these modern adaptations of MP and WP paint schemes is a genius! I can hardly wait to see what the next ones will look like!

However, this event is bittersweet. The fact that this was done to keep to logos alive in order to collect on royalties really takes away lot of the enjoyment out of seeing these engines. I don't have a problem with Union Pacific licensing their logo. I do, however, have a real problem with them wanting to collect money for the use of it! Major brands that licence out their name and logos DO NOT charge any fees to their licensees. Read Allan Miller's post in this topic over at the Classic Toy Trains forum.

Probably because the D&RGW had already purchased and assimilated the SP by the time UP got to it. I would love to see their interpretation of a Rio Grande unit, as well as a black widow and daylight SP. I am guessing they will do a variation of the bloody nose though.

Another thought, if they are really doing heritage why not do a "Kansas Pacific", "Oregon Short Line", "Yakima Valley", etc. Or even the heritage of the heritage like the "Cotton Belt", "International Great Northern", "Texas & Pacific", "Minneapolis & St. Louis", etc.

I just have one Question?

Will the UPRR use them on Specials? Or will they be used on regular Freight runs?
Allan.

They ran a special old timers run, and will be used for freight.
And according to Union Pacifics website, there will be a DRGW locomotive.

Imagine how much the cost of models of these locomotives will cost!!

After all the licensing fuss,yYou can bet copyrights had more than a little to do with it. Not the UP officials comments on the subject.

I must correct all who are saying there are 5 ACes being painted. There ARE 6 and there WILL be a DRGW...thankfully. I must also say that the SP Ace should be in the daylight colors.

So, are you all saying that the UP may be painting present-day power / technology using at least 5 paint schemes of the RR's UP absorbed?

That being an MKT, MP, CN&W, WP and SP?

Trademarks or not, I have always believed keeping the "heritage" alive is the best thing to do.

Painting xxx engines for each division where a specific railroad used to run before being absorbed. Eventually the units will mix / co-mingle like they would have in the old days.

Thanks UP for recognizing your roots...

TO csmith9474, as an RV'er I travel a lot and here in the southwest I see unblemished, original rio grande units all the time and have several pictures, so don't dispair, they're still out there! do love the new UP color schemes, gives me good reason to buy new film for my old 35mm (hate digital). We got UP going right thru town here in Las Vegas! Larry in Las Vegas.

Were these units painted at WSOR's Horicon shop or somewhere on the UP?

Yes, as many have pointed out, there will be a D&RGW unit...and all of them will be assigned as "regular" freight engines to be used throughout the system...I'm sure UP will gather some or all of them together from time to time to power employee specials...such as what they just did after their Omaha unveiling, but otherwise, they will be just part of the power pool.
UP said they expect the units to stay in their Heritage colors at least ten years, and will touch them up if they start to have cosmetic problems.

Has anyone else noticed that UP is using the SD70ACes solo on stack trains? I had never seen UP run less than two units even on short trains. I have seen three stack trains pass through Davis, CA with only one SD70ACe on point. I can't wait to see one of these specially painted units by its lonesome with a stack train....in any of the fallen flag schemes![:D]
