I saw the California Zephyr back in Jan or Feb with a couple of Express cars tacked on. I read as well that there is one last contract that will not let Amtrak get out of the express business.

for some stupid reason bnsf makes amtrack the highest piority. i am a conductor/engineer and have worked in winslow, az for the past 4 yrs and can state for a fact that it does not matter what train you are on, when amtrack gets close you are going to stop and let amtrack get around you and or by you. yes it is true that bnsf does has more capacity on its transcon route vs the up. but as of yesterday we ran 98 trains between belen and needles. with this type of volume extra capacity does not equal more space for amtrack(slamtrack) running this many trains you might as well have three siding for the 600 miles of track between belen and needles. mark my words, with the volume that bnsf has right now within the next year the railroad will have a melt down just like the up did when they merged with the sp unless bnsf starts spending some serious money on capital expansion!

I love both of the railroads but I favor BNSF only slightly over the UP, when I go railfanning in Kennewick, WA I would go railfanning on the BNSF (formerly BN) line which goes from Spokane-Portland, plus I had alot of great memories watching the BN trains go by from my uncle's house and although I still wi***hat BN and ATSF are still 2 different railroad companies but it still feels like the days of when it used to be the BN railroad, fortunately you still see alot of the BN freight cars.
