Norfolk Southern wide body "cowl" units
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 2:38 PM
I was wondering if NS ever had any wide body units on their roster, like F45's or FP45's. Thanks for any info.

F45 and FP45 locomotives were only on western railroads. The last FP45 is at Larrys Truck and Electric, other than those at museums.

Yed indeed, the WC did have at least one ex ATSF FP45 but I'm not sure if it is still around or has been scrapped.

Check out the upper left photo on page 31 in the July 05 Trains.
Magnificatin shows it to be a Warbonnet FP-45 in Barstow Ca.
Looks like it's stored with a TTX flat.
Anyone know the story on this?
The photo is not dated, but could this be the one now at Larry's? Or are both museum bound?
TIA,
Jimmy

There were 14 FP45's. ATSF got 9 in 1968 and the CMSP&P got the other 5 in 1969.
All of the CMSP&P's were scrapped in the 1980's. 7 of the ATSFs are still around. 90 at Oklahoma City, 91 at Larry's, 92 at Union Illinois, 93 at Wichita Kansas, 95 at Barstow, 97 at Dallas and 98 at Perris California. The ATSF units have also had other numbers.
There were 86 F45's, built from 1968 until 1971.Great Northern got 14 (427-440) and they ordered 12 more which would have been 441-452. These GN units became BN 6600-6625. BN then got 20 more, 6626-6645.
ATSF got 40, 5950-5989.
4 of the BN units went to the Utah Railway (6606,6607,6608,6613). 3 went to Transcisco and then to the Wisconsin Southern (1001,1002,1003)and then to Montana Rail Link (391,392,393).NYS&W got two, 3638 (6644) and 3636 (6640).3638 went to MRL 390.
I believe the first freight cowls were the ATSF U30CG's. ATSF also got 18 SDF40-2 from Amtrak. CN had 20 HR 616 (MLW), 60 SD50F, 64 SD60F and 55 Dash 8-40CM and 26 Dash 8-40CM when they got BC Rail. CP got 25 SD40-2F..

derailment? what derailment? All reports of derailments are lies. Their are no derailments within a hundreed miles of here.

Whatever became of the 8 F45's that were leased to South Shore Line during the Venango River ownership? They were to be used as coal train pool power but never turned a wheel in service on South Shore.

The first 4 SD60F's built in 1985 were designated SD50AF.

Basically an SD50AF is an SD50F with a 710 prime mover and other SD60 innards. As "experimentals" they were numbered 9900-9903, then renumbered 5500-5503 when CN proceeded with their SD60F order in 1989. I think that the 9900s were actually on lease from GMD, then purchased outright as part of the SD60F order in '89.

One of my favourite early railfan photos is a shot I took of 9900 not long after delivery...hooping up a train order. [:)]

Actually, although they ended up in freight service, they were originally built for passenger service, and were originally painted in the old "Warbonnet" passenger colors. The "G" stands for steam Generator, for train heating.

I think a cowl unit would look cool in all black. Then again I'm partial to black diesels.

Good info, Nanaimo73!

On those 18 SDP40fs that went to Santa Fe, one supposedly has been saved as a gentleman came forward and purchased it. Don't know if it's the Maersk unit.

Anyone know the details?

The ATSF F45s were built as 5900 to 5939 but these numbers were raised by 50 at their major rebuild when they (probably) were upgraded to Dash 2 electrical gear.
