yes they are independantly controllable from the head end, except the only comination that is not allowed is to have the head end pulling while the others are in dynamics (for obvious reasons, although it might be nice in certain situations). as for knowing when, it's just a matter of skill and judgement as to where the middle/rear units are in the terrain. generally though, they work quite nicely even when all are operating in syncronous mode.
