When the SP first started to use the talking detectors they were male voices. This was sometime around 1983-4 if I remember correctly. I think it was about 1989 or 1990 they stated using the female voices. The company said it caught our attention better than male voices.

I got my first scanner in 89' I think. I do remember hearing the male detectors back then. They sounded really bad like the computer voice on the movie "War Games". But I only heard them when I was away from home. When we got them on the Modoc line they were all female and I don't remember any male detectors after that. At the same time we got detectors the PBX signatures went from male to female also.
