E 9's Coming West
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, April 27, 2005 8:34 PM
Two E 9's, the MARC nos.91 and 92 are leaving Baltimore tonight enroute to their new home, the Illinois Railroad Museum. Still in their paleo-BN Green, they are the last of a group of about 20 units brought east from Chicago area commuter operations by MARC. I don't know if they are to be cosmetically rebuilt or actually restored for operation.

And no, they aren't together. We spliced a white tankcar between them to enrage the photogs. [actually, we were told to...]

Hmmmmmm. the tank car.

Is it a fuel tender? I remember seeing photos in TRAINS magazine years back of tank car fuel tenders that Class 1 railroads were using. But that was back in the 80s.

The fuel tenders, obviously, allowed locomotives to run extended range trips without having to stop for fuel.

I guess that old saying "You can't go home again" is not true...well, sort of, as the original home of the E9's is about fifty miles from the IRM home in Union, IL.

A good pr stunt would be to have the two BN E9's lead a special train west on the Racetrack to Eola Yard before heading north on the J & UP Belvidere branch.

Can anybody connected with IRM intelliegently confirm if this is true?
I believe IRM once had two ex BN E-9s then de-assecioned one.
Could they be for a c/n/b parts supply.
Don't get me wrong, I feel that you can't preserve too many E units, but this news sounds too good to be true.

[:I] IRM has both of the BNSF "executive" E-9 units as well as (I believe) one or two executive F9's as well. They also have/had another ex BN E-9 being used for parts for the other units. I just heard a story yesterday that went like this...The then president of BNSF (Krebs) was traveling behind the just rebuilt (to GP38-2 specs) F9's and they needed to stop for fuel and he asked why they could not go further without refueling and was told the units did not have sufficient fuel capacity and he said "Get rid of them" and they were donated to IRM at that point...what an idiot....bad for BNSF and good for IRM.

I've heard that Krebs is the paradigm of efficiency. However, sometimes one does have to wonder about too much of a good thing. In this instance, I would kind of tend to believe Mr. Krebs a bit too efficient.

I still think that the railroad world needs to look at the UP's steam program. All one needs do is watch the crowds that appear whenever #3985 (and #844 again soon!) show up. One look at a big steamer like that is intoxicating. Seeing it run at speed cannot be matched. I'm sure the UP pays quite a bit for the insurance on the program. But, I also think that any inconvenience or insurance woes are more than worth it in the PR department. Just an opinion.

Now if we could get one of the RR's to use steam for their busniess trains...THAT would be the penultimate. At least it would be to me if I was president of a railroad. Of course, if Mr. Krebs didn't like the range of an updated F9, I'm sure a steam locomotive couldn't even come close.

Hey! HEY! Is it true? I told you. Look at my signature line below...

BTW, the tankcar is not a fuel tender, but a revenue TIONA pigments car. In reply to another post, these horses ain't pulling nuttin through Belvedere of anyplace else; they've been parked by MARC's Riverside Shop since retirement about eight years back. We put them in the shop about a year ago and a shopman said they were looking into making HEP cars out of them. They may actually have been put in the shop so IRRM people could go through them.

Y'all start looking for them, as they should be landing in the heartland any day...I want to see some pictures too.

Interesting responses (especially about "intelectual / NON SPIRITUAL" president Krebs!), but nobody answered my question:
Is IRM getting a couple more E-units?
re: the two BN exec Es, I think they KEPT one, and de-asscesioned one to an outfit in texas that has restored it into a CB&Q unit (its' original identity).

If anyone's interested....

WSOR's two E9s went to the Chicago area yesterday with a business train, someone said they should be floating around on UP's track in northern IL and near Beloit, WI.

Who knows what goes through some people's heads... I've worked at company's where the owner went ballistic over people using too many paper towels one day... Then gave away the farm the next. Kind of like the people that spend every Sunday clipping coupons, then proceed to march into a car dealership, and buy the car for the sticker price.
