SD60M comes in several versions. Two and Three windshield models for the 60, Two for the 70. The 60 has HT-C trucks, like the SD40-2, and the 70 has HT-R trucks which look totally weird. The 70 is longer and has an extra intake on the rear of the long hood I think on one side only. They both have the 710G prime mover with the 60 at 3800hp and the 70 at 4000. The 60 has the -2 sight glass on the right side of the long hood and I think the 70 does not. WWW.Railfan.net has loads of photo's

One thing they have in common is that they are both underated, especially the SD60 series. Excellent power.

SD60's have regular electro-hydraulic-mechanical governors controling the engines speed and load regulation, whereas SD70's have electronic fuel injection and no governor. 70's are slightly higher in horsepower 4000, I think.

one problem the sd60 has is that it does not have axel cutouts. the 70 is electronic and the sd 40 is manual done. in other words if youu trip the ground relay on a emd you can cut out the axel that is cousing the problem . but on the 60 your done. otherwise it is great power.

Is that true on all SD60's or just NS's?

i dont know if its just ns or all sd60s. i would be under the impression its all as i cant see emd doing this for just one railroad. i have seen union pacific engines in the sd 40s and the sd 70s and they are just like the ns engines. what i dont understand is the reason for not allowing the crew to cut axels out and continue on your way.

My guess, and it is just a guess, is that the SD60 was EMD's first mass produced computer controled locomotive and that perhaps they couldn't figure out how to isolate the axles just yet. Again, just a guess.

Chris
with the recent UP 1000 unit order of SD70M's. A good percentage are 710 engines with a MUI engine control/fuel system on it. At the beginning of 2002 all 70's are produced with EUI engines (due to emissions). So that fleet is a mixed group. It seems the governor units run better than the EMDEC units (Electro Motive Diesel Engine Control).
