Are there many traffic lights??? Good grief, this is Nebraska. [:D] First off, U.S. 30 doesn't go through Omaha. There are traffic lights in any large cities like Blair, Fremont, Schuyler, Columbus, Central City, Grand Island, and Kearney. Can't think of any others. Just curious why you're wondering about traffic lights since there's no point in chasing on this line. There are plenty of trains and enought towns with speed restrictions that you're not going to be chasing anyway.

Good luck, PF1

Are you a "crazy" traffic light fan? If you are, you'll be disappointed traveling the 30 route.

PS: Wouldn't taking pictures of stop lights really get people's curiosity?

Have driven the route many times from Missouri Valley, IA to Cheyenne, WY. There are lots of places to watch trains, and pace them, without having to worry about stop lights. I like the stretch west of North Platte to the Nebraska/Wyoming border.

Mostly 2 lane blacktop. Lots of trucks. You will have to do a lot of dodging and weaving if you want to keep up with the trains, unless you hit a day with more than 25 or 30 empty coal trains out there then is slows a little going into N Platte. It really picks up west of Gibbon, NE where the line to KC comes in. NP-Gibbon sees 100-150 trains a day.

First thak U 4 the reponse! Reason is I am going when I arrive from Omaha to Kearney which Mapquest says will take me 3 hours via I80. But somebody told me the real action is on 30 so I was wondering how much longer would it be via 30? By the way where I come from traffic lites are truly a way of life! [:D][:)]

Thank U also for the response. Actually why I asked the question is that I wanted what to know the "normal" time via 30 would be Omaha to Kearney. [:D][:p][:)]

No.1. Omaha sucks when it comes to traffic,I know because I have to put up with it.
No.2. If you plan on doing Train chasing. Do it away from the Towns. Because you will incounter lot's of Traffic........Traffic Light's.........And so on.(Speed Limits). And watch out for the Cops too if you obey the law they won't bother you at all.

Thanks for replying. No once I leave the Omaha airport I was just wondering what the time frame maybe to Kearney via R30? It is only me so driving & train chasing would be difficult at best.

Hah you want to see traffic come to the lower SE. If you come bring crash helmet & very sharp reactions as you have seen nothing like it anywhere. I have been in many states but Florida is the worst in my opinion.

Well, your success really depends on the day you're there. Some days I can sit for hours and see nothing on the Omaha Sub. Other days are great. I had one extremely rare day when I saw 14 westbounds between Fremont and Columbus. I was in a hurry to get home since I had been out of town at a conference so I only shot two of them. What I'm really saying is that I saw 14 westbound trains in slightly over an hour. Plus I overtook three eastbounds. Odds are that you're going to see lots and lots of trains. There always exceptions. I can remember sitting for about five hours at Cozad w/o seeing anything moving so even the triple track has its moments. And again, this is Nebraska so there is very litte traffic on the roads. What we consider bad traffic would be laughable to lots of drivers in other parts of the country. Once you're out of Omaha you'll be fine.

Have fun, PF1

Thanks again for all the info but I guess I will already be "out of town" as I am departing straight from the airport at Omaha going west around mid day on a Monday. My question is what would you guess would be the drive time using 30 instead of I-80 to reach Kearney? My ultimate goal is Gibbon so between the 2 divisons that merge at Gibbon I hope I will see a fair share of trains ( not like your experience @ Cozad). Yes coming from the lower SE with its extremely dense traffic I completely understand what you are saying about Nebraska traffic. [:o)][:D]

Kearney? Hey, its THE place to watch trains. Tripple track UP main with a PUBLIC parking lot trackside. NOBODY will bother you ... not even the police (hopefully).

Should take you roughly 3.5 hours on Rt 30 to get to Gibbon that is what it used to take me hauling meat out of that area to make it in of course I was a lot heavier than a car and took longer to get to speed.

OK thanks a lot for the info. Based on what time I get out of the airport will determine if I take 30 or I-80. [:o)][:D][:p]

Rt 30 would be your best bet I-80 is under counstruction right now and is a mess. Learned that from a few friends I have who still drive trucks over the road.

Take 30. If you're coming out to watch trains you may as well drive the road that parallels the tracks. 80 will get you out there faster, but think of all the trains you'll miss. Most of the way out on 30 you're right next to the tracks while you rarely see them from the interstate and when you do see them from the interstate you're too far away to take pix. 30 is your best bet.

Have a safe and enjoyable visit, PF1
