Over and under shots
Posted by anb740 on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 11:47 PM
After a week of cloudy weather (and 13 inches of rain!), I finally hit the jackpot with an over/under shot of a CSX train running above an NS train below. I almost had all four Class 1's in the shot as well! Now for curiosity's sake, how many have bagged a shot like this??? It took me over 6 years at this location before nailing a winner! (I won't confess how many "near misses" I've seen.....it's depressing)

I've had my share of good and bad photography experiences-one just recently...
It was Sunday afternoon three weeks ago and I was outside doing some yard work, when off in the distance I heard a train horn. So I dropped what I was doing, grabbed up my fancy new digital camera, jumped in my truck and took off for the tracks which are about two miles from my house. When I got there, the train was sitting still just behind a hill and out of shot, so I had to sit and waited for it for about 30 minutes. When it finally did emerge, I got so excited that I accidently flipped the on switch to video and missed the whole ---- thing... Talk about sick.

Nice shot! While I have photos with multiple trains, none are over/under.

Great photo! I usually just glance at the photos, but this one required some study!

Nice picture!!! I don't have many opportunities like that around me, heck I'm lucky to get pictures of any trains these days! No, not really, I hear CP/Amtrak blowing the horns for the crossing near me several times a day, so I can get 'em when I want 'em... But again, nice picture!

Tree - come to think of it, you're right! We have one overpass, but no underpass. Otherwise it is all on the ground! Tracks, that is....

Yep, I've done this myself once...wound up having to chase the train another 30 miles down the tracks to get another shot of the "non-moving" variety. I could write a book on the bad luck experiences I've had in railfanning....Chapter 1 "Over/Under shot near-misses"

Wow, cool shot. Do you have a bigger one saved? I need a new desktop.

Sorry, but due to copyright issues I've had in the past, I no longer give original shots to anyone.(a couple of bad eggs wound up spoiling for everyone) This is why the internet shots I have are shrunk down in size, and degraded in quality. (not to mention the original file is over 4Mb in size, and I'm on miserable dial-up...I'll let you do the math on that one.) Glad you liked the pick though!!! [:)]

This might be the ultimate "lucky shot". On the weekend before Amtrak took over psgr trains I took my two boys for a camping/railfanning trip to Cajon and Tehachapi. As we were approaching Mojave southbound there was an SP train standing on the double track. Since we'd just passed a Santa Fe train I thought I'd stop and get some sequence shots of the passing. Only they didn't pass, they met. The Santa Fe train knocked over the SP caboose and the last two or three cars of the train. My younger son was asleep in the back of the rig but my elder son had been watching through binoculars. I looked over to ask if he'd seen that and his slack jaw and saucer eyes told it all. When I got the slides processed you could make out the SP brakeman doing the high hurdles over the sagebrush and the ATSF and SP clearly demonstrating Newton's law about only one piece of matter occupying a given space at the same time

NS 3180 was the third unit. And if you like that one, I caught it's sister 3192 (complete w/brake stand) on the point of a local today running long hood forward. A refreshing change from the Dash-9 onslaught!

Nice shot.

I spent a lot of time trying to get a three in one shot on Cajon.
When I finaly got it I was so stoked. It was worth all the time I spent trying.
