It is an irrelevant relic of earlier times, and statistically causes more motor vehicle accidents and health claims in the days following. That extra hour or two at the end of the day is a godsend to a surveyor/mudchicken. Except for GPS(*), working in the dark is not efficient. When you have to do your precision optical work either near dawn or dusk, that extra hour shifted ahead is appreciated. If you never have experienced heatwaves through a transit, theodolite, total station or level, you're in for a real treat. I assume you guys call the reverse "Fall back", but the term "Fall" isn't used much here. Only trees imported from Europe lose their leaves here, the great majority of trees being evergreens. We miss the extra hour of sunlight relative to the rail timetables. On Friday, because the sun set earlier, I missed the late running ATN (Australian Transport Network) grain train. Although it has been taken over by Pacific National, it often still uses the GT26Cs (1967 built modified SD40s) in Wisconsin Central colours, which are kept cleaner now that the operator has money to maintain them. Before the take over, I saw the train stop for water because the cooling systems were losing water so badly. They used the garden hoses on a big passenger station. Most freight trains run through the night here, and we see fewer of them. The really fast container service BM2 (BM = Brisbane - Melbourne, the main East Coast line) did come through just before the light failed. Just today in fact, we've noted the little green leaves coming out on brush alongside the county road and buds on our trees bursting through...And...I expect to start my yard mowing season this coming Monday. A great time of the year for my liking...everything becoming green and blossoms will be out soon with their fragrance, etc....Our winter snow fall was almost right on normal....26 inches. Lunch at noon, now that's different... It's what I call a "stupid human trick." It's just like setting a clock ahead 10 minutes so you won't be late... Interestingly enough, in a sense everybody was right! Originally, nationwide DST was adopted in Germany in 1916 (right country, wrong war, steamerfan), Britain in 1916, and in the USA (along with mandatory standard time) in spring 1918. Unpopular, it was rescinded here in 1919, and only restored nationally as a wartime measure (by that Roosevelt administration) from 1942 to 1945. Then it was rescinded again (as a Federal measure, that is) all the way to the introduction of the Uniform Time Act of 1966 (15 U.S. Code Section 260a, Public Law 89-387) on April 12. Law was revised in 1972, and again in 1986 (which is when DST was made to take effect at 2am the first Sunday in April, and drop at 2am the last Sunday in October. There was also that panic attack during the Nixon Administration, after the oil embargo, when DST was made 'permanent' for 15 months, despite the fact that savings in much of the USA are minimal during November to February.
