I put a stopwatch on how long it took to access the site from outside.

25 seconds

Once inside, calling up individual threads is nearly instanteous with clicking on the thread.

That's about the same situation that I get.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Very similar.

Same for me on an iPhone 14 with broadband WiFi.

I go through the unified page at

https://www.trains.com/community/forums/

This page usually loads quickly, but it can be delayed a few seconds when I come back to it after backing out to Google.

The delay is selecting the 'go to forum' -- sometimes there is no visible feedback that a button is pressed, sometimes there is only a minimal wiggle in the text.  If I press one and then others, only the last one clicked eventually opens, so it is not input buffering.  Once I get to the site, forums and threads generally come up fast.

It still throws me to some weird page of the thread after I post, with messed-up formatting of the page numbers and buttons displayed at the top.  I have to back out to the main forum directory and then go back in.

MR is still ignoring the 'last post first' global configuration setting.  Trains, on the other hand, won't let me read in post order even if I select it.

The "Last Post First" button works for me on both the Trains and MR forums - using FireFox on a Mac. Hmmm.

In the process of trying out the "Last Post First" on the MR forum, I opened up a new tab with the https://cs.trains.com/f/  address that I've used for years to access the forums and the forum came up almost instantly. This suggests the delay between first accessing the site and the site loading is due to the forum software  loading up the account information.

I should mention that I have the 'system global' setting in Preferences for 'last post first' turned on.

MR doesn't recognize the global setting.

Trains applies it whether or not I try to toggle or temporarily override it with the 'Order ascending/Order descending' tabs.

When I make a post it apparently returns me to the "last page" of its list, which of course is in reverse order due to the last-post-first setting so I'm dumped somewhere that I have to back out of.

Another thing I have noticed - if I am 'in the system' and take some time in formulating a response to a thread, when I go to 'Submit Your Reply' the time required for the response to post makes it seem as if the system has 'logged me out' and is handling the posting as a New entry to the system.

FWIW

Starting the evening of 9/6 it appears that the hamsters powering the Trains Forum servers have been put on starvation rations and the Forum can only generate 504 Gateway Timeout errors on a consistent basis.  Sunday evening 9/8 it looks like a takeout meal must have been delivered so the boys had enough strength to spin the generator part time.

Pretty much the same for me as well. Forums are back to the long wait t login, followed prompt response once login is complete.

Addendum: It took about 3 to 4 seconds for the original version of this to post, not exactly instantaneous, but much better than a couple of. months ago.

The gremlins seemed to be at work again this morning but now the system seems to be behaving well.

I'll tell you though if we don't see some more participation in the  various mag-related Forums we're gonna lose 'em.  I can understand some of the regulars being frustrated and leaving but I hope they eventually come back.

Since it is a railroad based forum - they are following the PC & SP modis operandi of killing passenger service - service so bad that everyone goes another way.

When I made the above post - I got a 504 Error after I hit the Submit button and did not know if the post had actually made it to the forum.  Guess it did.

Finally got back on-line as well...

Pretty quick response when posting this before this edit.

Editing this one more time to check the turnaround time - wondering why no-one has posted anything today.

wondering why no-one has posted anything today.

Busy elsewhere.

And today I was on the railroad on a trip to Tupper Lake.  Colors are past peak in the mountains.

Yesterday 10/14 I got a 504 one time and was able to get in when I rerequested the action.

I am still noticing that it takes 30 to 40 or so seconds to originally get on the forum and then in the short term subsequent requests are handled expeditiously.  However, if you take time creating a post, the system reverts to the 30 to 40 second method of operation.

I just had a "504 Gateway time out" error just before logging in - out of a whim I hit the retry button and the site came up almost instantly. Sounds like it is taking its sweet time to validate credentials before letting me in (which could be construed as a good idea).

I emailed overmod last night and he responded with some very specific ideas on how to get the website back on track - one of the tricky aspects is preserving the history of forum postings as there is some very useful information scattered amongst the posts. (my opinion)

I will be very happy when the login issue gets straightened out, as it kind of feels like an early cold war story where the few survivors are trying to make ontact with each other.

As an aside - I am not able to connect to Trainboard.com - it appears to be some sort of issue with Security as it appears the security certificate has expired.

The following error shows "net::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID"

I am surprised it is taking so long for Trainboard to fix their certificate.
