White might come next week.

Hearing rumors of a major system, currently over the Great Plains, working its way east.

Warm would be nice.  Zero here this morning.

Looks like you got our 'atmospheric river'. Plenty of snow over the weekend in the mountains (six feet at Donner, three in the foothills and Truckee). Unfortunately nothing decent is forecast in the near future to alleviate the severe drought here.

Here are some snow links:

Snow spreading on the UP (ex-SP), YT WXChasing channel (no audio):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcmD_hCnwHQ

I-80 (from Caltrans): https://www.magnifeye.com/webcams.php#i80

Truckee: https://hdontap.com/index.php/video/stream/downtown-truckee-california

For travelers, if you want some forecast video see Sacramento TV stations like KCRA https://www.kcra.com/weather also found on YT and local news consolidators.  By contrast, the SFBA stations focus on local weather and tack on Sierra snow in the last 15 seconds Bang Head.

This also explains why you will see a lot of footage of local affluent high end SUV drivers driving up there completely unprepared for chain conditions, sometimes dressed in shorts and flipflops  Dots - Sign.  Many truckers are no better - they blow through the checkpoints and hit the ice a mile down the road (envision video in slow motion) closing the freeway again.

Ah, wintertime ....

Forecasting upwards of a foot of the white stuff in the next few days.

Great - I'm headed down to the railroad Friday for a couple of days - and will be driving right through the snow belt.

At least I'm staying over and won't be driving back through it until Saturday...

The snow is about to begin here.  I'm hoping for a best case scenario for my trip to the railroad tomorrow.  There's heavy snow and wind in the forecast, though, so it may not be a pleasant trip.

This is the last weekend of PE, the last trains being on Monday.  I doubt I'll work that day unless they are really hard up for help...  I do like to work the last trips, though, as they are usually followed by a get-together at a local restaurant.

While most people head south in winter, I'm heading north.  My wife is visiting her old college roommate in Hartford, CT so I'm leaving very early tomorrow morning for an overnight trip to the Soo. It's been several years since I've been there.  The railfanning isn't much anymore, now that the Wisconsin Central and Algoma Central are gone.  It'll be mostly "boatnerding".  I'm hoping to catch a few of the footers that normally run Twin Ports-Chicago like the Indiana Harbor, Burns Harbor and Stewart Cort, since I don't see them in Detroit. Hopefully, I'll find a good whitefish dinner somewhere to make the trip complete!

PS-There was a big, easterly blow on Superior so many of the ships were anchored in bays, but they're all moving once again.

Winter finally made its appearance in our part of the Chicago area with about a half inch of snow, fortunately on the grassy areas only.  Streets and sidewalks were only wet but not slick.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Ran my last Polar Expresses, and my last trains, for the season tonight.  Two more nights of PE, but I'm not working them.

First time running our M420.  And our mechanic was on board tinkering with transition.  He thinks it's where he wants it...  It's a good engine.

Six years ago today I retired.

I'll be fourteen years at the end of the month.  Never looked back.

Dad's been gone for over 52 years now, and Mom for five.

At least it's not snowing here today...
