Book. I've got to have it! I'm going to buy it!

OK,

Despite the fact that I was informed this afternoon that I have a rather large ($3,000) medical bill coming up, I'm going to spring for this ebook at $31.49.  (I've got great insurance, but they won't  pay beyond the basic cataract surgery.  I'm not going to go cheap with my eyes.)

I once had lunch with one of the authors.  Robert E. Gallomore was head of the Northwestern University Transportation Center when I broke bread with him.  A friend of mine, the late Doug Hagestad, was an adjunct professor with the TC.  He set up the lunch.   Gallamore was a former Union Pacific VP and Doug was a former ICG VP.  Gallamore is a PhD economist.  Little ole me was just there.  All three of us turned out to be big baseball fans.  Gallamore favored the Red Sox,  Doug routed for the Cubs.  Me, I've always pulled for the White Sox.

So we talked about railroading and baseball.  It cannot get more interesting.

Here's the ebook synopsis.  Some of you may want to look in to it.  Click on "Look Inside".

"By many measures, the U.S. freight rail system is the safest, most efficient and cost effective in the world." - Federal Railroad Administration, October, 2009. I'm just your average, everyday, uncivilized howling "anti-government" critic of mass government expenditures for "High Speed Rail" in the US. And I'm gosh darn proud of that.

Me too!  I put it on my Kindle wish list as soon as I saw it.  I am pleased to learn that it is being endorsed by you.  At $31.95 it is not like the pot boilers I get for $2.99, but I am sure it will be worth the money.

Generally favorable review of this book in the A-section of Tuesday's Wall Street Journal by Daniel Machalaba (former WSJ transportation reporter) - I thought of you (greyhounds) immediately.  But I suspect it will seem like 'old news' to many of us here, who've been reading the gospel according to George W. Hilton and some others - many railroad officials, such as ICG's Harry Bruce, but neither of these authors ! (Gallamore and Meyer) - in Trains magazine for many years along these same lines.  Nevertheless, I'd be interested in your review of the book as well.

I am delighted to see that Dr. Gallamore has finished the book and I will be buying a print copy. The working title of the book was Enduring Enterprise: The Demise and Re-Birth of American Railways in the 20th Century. Gallamore did a Power Point presentation to Northwestern University Transportation Center's Sandhouse Gang back in 2006. It is worth a look to get the scope of the book. http://www.transportation.northwestern.edu/docs/2006/2006.06.12.Gallamore.Presentation.pdf
