Trains magazine, back in the 1970s, had a great article about that staged collision. As I recall, the railroad’s mechanical experts assured management that the boilers would not explode during the crash. Yet one did explode and gave the crowd the full experience of train wreck horror instead of just the symbolism of an enactment that they had bargained for.
I would expect iron fragments to be buried there today since they were widely disbursed after landing from the explosion.
"...widely disbursed...."? Did a bursar pay them out?
