My wife returned from a visit to West Palm Beach FL and reported that at night she could hear trains blowing for crossings. Since there is a chance she and I might make a return visit, in which case I'd probably have the days to myself for railfanning, does anyone have a notion of train frequency and what I'd be likely to see in the way of operations in that area? I see the tracks on google maps and satelite view so i know where they are but would appreciate some info on train frequency and whether daytime railfanning is actually very practical.

So far as Amtrak trains are concerned, there are two in each direction. Here is the link to the schedules: http://www.amtrak.com/ccurl/551/930/Silver-Service-Palmetto-Schedule-011413.pdf

Multiple Tri-Rail commuter trains between West Palm Beach and Miami on basically a Monday- Friday basis. CSX operates one merchandise train each way between Tampa & Miami through WPB. There is a Rock Runner round trip that operates between Miami and Tampa. CSX also originates a local from their WPB facility. There is a auto train that sets its cars off at the Palm Center auto facility North of WPB and brings it's power down to WPB to tie up, take rest and the go back North to Palm Center to pick up the empty auto racks and continue North.
I have no idea of the FEC operations.
