I suppose you can do all that.  Or you can just convert it to feet and move the decimal point two digits to the left.

well, yeah ... but the maths there work for anything grade-wise...
say 2% grade ... becomes x/179520 = 1/50 (more maths here).

My way gives you 1%  if you need 2% mulitply by two.  If you need 1.5% multiply by 1.5

Thanks, Dave, for the information about the Charlotte Gateway Station. It looks as though I will never be able to use it, since I will be in my nineties (if I am still around), at least, before it is finished.

I trust that Amtrak will not be evicted from the North Tryon station until another station location is available.

It was not that long ago, 1959-1960, when Santa Fe built the 44 mile Transcon  line change in Arizona.  I was one of the engineering party chiefs

Awesome work you and the rest of the work force did on that line relocation.  To this day it is still some of the smoothest track on the transcon.  No matter how hard I try, I always fall asleep while riding the Southwest Chief over this portion of the line...at 90mph no less.

I'm sure you've seen this, but if not, the promotional film that Morrison-Knudsen produced for this line relocation is on YouTube,  here's the link:

Sorry for getting a bit off topic, but the Crookton relocation has always be an interest to me.
