4449 Schedule?
Posted by eolafan on Monday, June 15, 2009 9:44 AM

I am hoping to see 4449 come through Eola on Saturday, July 18...does anybody have any information that might indicate at what time this is likely to happen if she is on schedule?  Thanks

"On Saturday, July 18, 2009, No. 4449 will head from Minneapolis to Chicago on BNSF. After an overnight stay, on Sunday July 19 the train will depart for Durand, Michigan, on Canadian National's ex-Grand Trunk Western route, arriving at the famous Durand Union Depot. "

Generally Milwaukee 261 trails the Empire Builder by about an hour. Since 4449 will be staying at the same shops as 261 and leaving from there, I would assume a similar timing, leaving maybe 8:30 a.m. Minneapolis (Central) time...although 4449 will be going down the east or "Burlington" side of the Mississippi River, not the west bank that Amtrak and 261 normally use.

So does anyone have information on the route this engine will be taking, specifically through Minnesota? Will it go through Staples or Willmar? Thanks, Jim

West of the Twin Cities, it is using the route of the Empire Builder.  So, yes, it will go through Detroit Lakes, Staples and St. Cloud.  It is scheduled to arrive in the Twin Cities on July 9th, so I assume it will be making this leg of the trip on that day.  The return trip is in October.

Here is a conflict.  This from the 4449 web site is the Empire Builder Route via CP through Wisconsin.  The Friends of 261 site is reporting the routing via BNSF direct from Minneapolis.  ?????

With the July 18 trip by SP 4449 through Chicago less than a week away, perhaps somebody in the Chicago metro area can clue me in on the trains schedule.  I heard recently it will come through Eola (Aurora) and down the BNSF triple track main line sometime in the afternoon of Saturday the 18th....can anybody give me a confirmation or any other details?  Thanks very much.

The material being distributed to the riders indicates a departure from the Harrison Street shops in Minneapolis at 8am on the 18th.  Arrival at Union Station is listed as 6pm with no information as to the location or estimated time of intermediate service stops.

I would think the arrival time is nothing but an educated guess.  For the trip from Portland to Minneapolis, there was a GPS real time locator on one of the cars that was accessed through the SP 4449 web site.  Assuming that car continues to Chicago, I think that it would give you the best idea of when to expect it through Aurora.

Thanks a lot, I checked the 4449 website and found the GPS still working and I will bring my laptop with me on Saturday to check her progress while I wait for her arrival in Aurora.  Thanks again.

Jim, I, too, saw that 6:00 figure for arrival at Union Station. I understand that diesels will pull it the last few blocks into the station because of 4449's size.

One report also has the train making a brief stop in Naperville to discharge passengers.

So, I'd expect it fairly early. I get off work at 1430; I hope you'll save me a place there!

Sure thing Carl, please look me up at Eola...I will be in a black Ford 500 and I'll have my laptop with me so we can track the progress of 4449.  I will likely get to Eola at about 2:00 to see the Amtrak California trains come through for the day...but I'm certain I won't be alone there.

When is the 4449 departing Chicago for Michigan?  I know it is on the 19th, but what time?

Does anyone know the exact line it will be on, what towns it will be passing through, and where the best spots to photograph it will be where/when?

All the websites for the Mich area have her on BNSF east and the CP to Milwaukee going west. Hope this helps.

Highball....Train looks good device in place!!

Gabe, we still haven't determined whether it's 0800 or 0900 when it will be departing the station. The locomotive would have to be added later, presumably at the Amtrak facilities, which will take a little more time before it even gets over the river.

Thereafter, I suspect that the routing would be identical to that of Amtrak trains into that part of the state: NS to Porter, Amtrak to Kalamazoo (via Michigan City, New Buffalo, and Niles), NS to Battle Creek, and CN to Durand (via Charlotte and East Lansing). Beyond that, it would have to use the Great Lakes Central to get to Owosso, though I don't know if this is part of any passenger trips.

Clarifying an earlier post (for Gabe): Departure will be at 0800 CDT, 0900 EDT.

The NS/Amtrak/CN routing for 4449 on the 19th is correct. The Amtrak pilot unit will lead the train into Union Station and out of it as well due to high clearances, I would also say the Amtrak yard is a good bet for where 4449 will be removed from the train. As for times for Saturday, 4449 has been pretty much on time every day of it's trip so far, so unless a problem develops or it gets held by freight traffic, it should be pretty close to 6PM into Chicago. The BNSF has so far been quite fair in giving 4449 priority and I would expect that to be the case Saturday as well.

An article in our local Aurora newspaper confirmed plans for 4449 to come down the C&I, passing through Rochelle at between 3:00 and 3:30 to arrive in Aurora/Naperville area about 5:00 and it is scheduled to make a brief stop at Naperville at 5:00 and be at CUS at 6:00.

I, for one, will NOT brave the crowds at Naperville which promise to be HUGE, but rather will watch 4449 and train come through Eola at track speed about fifteen minutes before arriving at Naperville.

Hope to see many of my fellow TRAINS posters out at trackside!

I plan on going out west of Aurora to see it really fly. I'm thinking of spending the morning at IRM for their Diesel Days event, then going over to the Steward area to catch 4449.

The GPS is in a car used by the crew, so it will be active throughout the trip.
