Bernina Express is part bus and part panorama coach train on the Rhaetian Railway. We departed by bus from Lugano. My reward was 50 minutes in Tirano, Italy, to indulge in delicious thin crust funghini pizza and water with gas. We beat feet to catch our train at Tirano aboard comfortable coaches with their soft seats in fours, facing a table top with the entire route map on its surface. One of the highlights, since our coach was a few cars from the rear, was that when you went around the swooping curves, you could get some cool shots of the rear of the train. The entire route has 55 tunnels and 196 bridges, however our journey ended at St. Moritz. Our time in St. Moritz was brief, but enough to know we weren’t equipped with high enough credit lines to get souvenirs from Bulvgari, Cartier, or the other high-end boutiques. Lucky for us the stunning view of the mountains and water were free!
We boarded another train to our final destination at Chur. The highlight en route were the tunnels and an all-to brief view of the Landwasser Viaduct, built in 1901-1902. The viaduct was built using only two cranes and without scaffolding. I missed out on grabbing a shot. I would’ve had to push a lot of the other Special Interest Tour members out of the way to get it. I’m sure their photos were better than what I would’ve gotten anyway.
