Posting a hyperlink to another thread within this forum

  • The process for this is broken.  When I copy a link into the forum post this is what happens:

    http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/744/t/247652.aspx

In my post screen it shows up as a hyperlink, when I click post, it goes away.

When I highlight and click the link button in the toolbar, paste the URL the same thing happens.  Once I click post, it un-hyperlinks.

    Edit:

It happens when editing as well.

  • BMMECNYC,

This has been an ongoing issue since a couple of software upgrades ago.  Here's the workaround:

Place a bracketed "url" (minus the quotes) on the front end of the link and a bracketed "/url" (minus the quotes) on the backside of the link.  It will then become clickable like the following:

    http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/744/t/247652.aspx

The baffling thing is that the old way of creating links still works when you use it in a PM.  For whatever reason it just doesn't work when posting it here in a thread. Sigh

  • I'll try this, just copied your original link.

    See if this works.

    Mike.

Edit:  Nope, didn't work.  I tried the Ctrl-v method I use when posting links or photos.

Edit:  And the only time I have problem with that method, is posting to a link in here, as you are trying.

  • mbinsewi,

I tried copying BMMECNYC's link URL from his orignal post and ran into the same issue.  After experimenting a bit I discovered if I pasted the URL directly into another browser address field and copied that URL, I could then paste it back into the my post (with the aforementioned url prefix and suffix) and it worked.  For whatever reason, copying and pasting the URL from the body of another post doesn't seem to work.

I wish this nagging issue would get addressed but I don't think it's a high priority with Kalmbach.

url in brackets first, paste the top-level thread link, then close with "/url" in brackets. This is what I type (red only for emphasis):

Seems to work every time for me.

  • Okay here goes:

  • Thank you.

That worked.  Can we merge this into a sticky thread or just the key points of it?  Call it a known forum problem workaround thread?

  • Never mind, I'm not getting it Dunce  Do you still click on the link chain thingy?

    Mike

  • "[url]" insert thread here  "[url]" a / goes between the [ and the u

    remove quotes.

  • I just copied and pasted the link provided in the initial post and added the url at the beginning and end. Let's see if that worked.

No, don't use the chain link icon at all.  It is what is broken.

Paste the url into the message manually then type

    "url" address goes here "/url".

    LOL

It works when I add the url before and after the link but when I "ADD Quote to your Post", the link does not work in the quoted portion of my reply. Go figure.
