Technical Issues After August 13, 2012 Maintenance

  • Heartland Division CB&Q

How do we edit our posts?

Oh ... The pencil allows edits. and brings up a bar of commands including formatting, spell check, and smilies Big Smile.....

    What pencil?? I don't see any pencil....HELP!!!!

There's never time to do it right, but always time to do it over.....

  • Hold everything - - - LOL I only see the pencil after I my response gets posted - then when I pressed the pencil, no editing commands came up at all. That is just plain dumb.

There's never time to do it right, but always time to do it over.....

  • Harold,

By clicking the "pencil", it should take you right into your post in editing mode.  You are clicking the correct symbol?  It's just to the right of the miniscule yellow reporting abuse triangle, at the bottom left corner of your post.

I wonder if they could enlarge the icon somewhat.  It is pretty tiny.

Time...It marches on...without ever turning around to see if anyone is even keeping in step.

  • Instead of Conversations, the new format references Conversations as New Message(s).

Under the old format, if you had "messages" (aka Conversations aka Private Messages), there would be a number after the word Conversations which indicated the number of updated Conversations that you needed to read.

Under the new format, the words New Message(s) turns red, but no number to indicate how many new messages you have to read.  Once you respond, the words New Message(s) remains in red, so the feature is rendered meaningless because thereafter you have to click on New Message(s) to see if there are any new responses.

If there are no new replies to be read, the words should be returned to black.

  • As comedian Bill Cosby once said in his 'bit' about see-saws: "WHO asked for this ?!?"

    Who instigated the change ?

What is better about it ?

What research or testing was down to see what the users think - and how they react to it ?

Who got paid to implement this change ?

What else changed 'behind the scenes' ?

Is this change costing Kalmbach more money - or saving money ?

I don't like the limited page navigation tools once you're into a specific thread - just the next 5 pages have buttons, but there's nothing for "First", "Last", "Previous", pages, etc., as there used to be.  So some of the longer threads will likely be a pain to review or peruse at length without those features.

Why no advance notice of the specific features/ effects of this change ?

As James "The Butler" said, calling a change this extensive as mere 'maintenance' is a bit disingenuous ! (like saying the Titanic had a leak !).

  • Right on Paul.  It makes me wonder what they think of the forum.

  • For some reason, my Safari browser can no longer connect.  I had to use Firefox.  Is this another wonderful result of "maintenance?"  Something always gets screwed-up!

  •  Well it has been 3 days now. I am pretty sure the new Format is Train Wreck.

I have been involved with Programs and Programming since the early 1960's, and there is one thing I have learned.  It is fix the stuff in back, but leave what people see alone.  The new IT generation wants everyone to see how great they are and when the thing bombs like this one did they don't want to take responsibility for it and just say you are stuck with the piece of crap they came up with.

Also, if all you people would get off of Internet Exploder and go to Mozilla they would not have to do these fixes to make it fit the Microsoft World.

    Rick J My 2 Cents

I see no reason to use a different browser, everything works in IE9. I never had a problem with te old forum. Firefox has achieved old Netscape status - ie, excessively bloated. A few years ago it was lean and mean, now it uses more resources than IE. And Chrome just fails on too many sites. And software that automatically insatlls the latets upodate every time you launch it is absolutely worthless for attempting to debug anything. It's so funny how peopel complain the more Microsoft removes the non-stnadard stuff - that was the 'problem' with the old forum software, it used non-standard stuff, which is why IE9 had to be put in 'compatibility' mode. By defualt it ignores all that non-standard stuff. It's actually quite quick and doesn't suck up a lot of system resources, I have no add popup issues, they are quickly blocked, and I haven't installed 3rd party software to do it. The ads on the right side here - what ads? And the whole myth of it being the 'reason' people get viruses and malware. Let's not go there.

Modeling the Reading Railroad in the 1950's

  • Who is the moron that came up with this mess?Who ever itb is and who ever oked it should fired.

  • With the two rails below it looking like legs, the icon looks more like the aliens in the old Atari "Space invaders" game.

But I think it is supposed to be a "bulllet train" type of engine.  Probably chosen from what was found in a web search for "train icon", made by the forum developer in a foreign country and he has never seen a train at all, so he didn't know any better.

  • I think the biggest motivation was to improve the forum for mobile devices.

I will admit that this new forum is 100x better on my phone than the old one.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any

  • I will agree it is working bettter on a cell phone. I hope I can do as well. Thx IGN

  • Sigh  Not yet impressed, although most of the features from the old version seem to be here.  The appearance is pretty lacklustre, though, and for some reason I'm seeing everybody's signature, even though I've asked that they be not shown. Bang Head

As for limits on photos, lemme see....

    1.

    2.

    3.

    4.

    5.

That should do it, and if all five photos don't show up, I'll have an opportunity to hunt for the "EDIT" function. Smile, Wink & Grin

Well!  The "Preview" option not only works, but it shows the photos, too. Thumbs Up

EDIT:  I've used the "EDIT" feature only to complain about the use of the pencil symbol instead of the word "EDIT".  We doan need no steenkin' symbols when a simple word would suffice. Angry

  • WHY? Just when everyone gets used to something, and it's working fine, someone decides to change it for no good reason. I renewed my subscription a couple months ago, but I get a message, "Can't find your subscription". So I have to log in with my old expired subscription name and address, and no access to member stuff. There's an old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"!!!!!!!

Memo to the staff: Most model railroaders are older and hate change!
