MSTS and TRAINZ 2006 download help.

  • I have both the MSTS and Trainz 2006 sim games, and am having a bit of difficulties with both of them. Of the MSTS, I downloaded some freight cars and locos I want to use, and was ondering how do I incorporate these into MSTS? Is there any way to make up a consist of various rolling stock and different locos? I'd like to make up a consist of some Santa Fe and BNSF Dash 9 locos, and various rolling stock.

As well, if I purchase the Cajon Pass Route (by 3D Train Stuff), and/or the Santa Fe over Tehachapi Pass, can I use the locos I want to use (for the original MSTS), with these add-on routes? Which one of the two are the best (scenery, Santa Fe locos, etc?)

For the Trainz 2006, I purchased an add-on with 4 GE Dash 8-40B locos (BNSF and Santa Fe). I got it downloaded after I purchased it, but I don't know how to get this to work. Can anyone give me some help to get these locos to work for me?

If anyone can help me with either problem, or all, I would be so much appreciative of your assistance.

    Thanks,

    Roger

  • Hi.

I'll try to give some advice on MSTS. I may not remember all folder names correctly, but hope this helps anyway.

If you have downloaded locomotives and cars, move these folders to the TRAINSET directory. This is under TRAINS in your MSTS program directory.

Placing the files doesn't yet make locos available in the game, so next, you'll have to create consists. This is done with the Activity editor.

Open MSTS editors and tools and select activity editor. You don't have to make an activity but the consist editor is incorporated there. Select NEW, and when asked, any route, it doesn't matter. You should find a Player service box and select NEW. A new box should appear listing things like PATH and CONSIST. Select NEW consist. This should open up the consist editor.

All the engines and cars in TRAINSET directory are listed in the consist editor. Select what you want from the list and drad it to the empty area below. When you are done, save the consist. Then you can exit the activity editor by closing all dialog boxes. You don't have to save anything else but the consist, so just click no if asked to save paths and services.

Hope this helps. Please ask if there are any problems.

  • For Trainz2006, it should have downloaded as a cdp file. A yellow box with cdp and 2006 written in it. Just double click and when cmp opens it, click ctrl+m to commit the asset. Should show up in surveyor and driver. If it's a zip file, unzip and then double click it.

  • Hi GP18m, thanks so much for the help:) I am having a HUGE problem though, I cannot locate this on my cd-

It's hard to know what to do or how to go about it when I've never tinkered with any kind of programs such as this. Hopefully my new friends will ahev patience for me and I'll finally find sucess:)

  • Hi.

I have the Ubisoft version too. Activity editor and other tools should be installed on your hard disk when you installed the game. I don't know if the installer makes a shortcut for it on the desktop, but it should be found from the Windows menus (..What are those under START button called..). If not go to the program directory and look for the program file there.

  • ...and this may be helpful too. It's a tutorial with pictures on making activities:

Consist editor is covered on parts 7 and from 11 to 27:

    and so forth.

  • For MSTS, I recommend Conbuilder (Conbuilder Lite is still free), which makes it very easy to build consists.  You need to have the equipment in a consist to use it.

With TrainStore (free on Train-Sim.com) you can run any activity on any route you have with any consist you choose, at any time of day.  It changes the player consist to the one you choose.

Of course, once a locomotive is listed as the lead locomotive of a consist, you can always drive it in explore the route mode.

There is also a product available out there call Activity Generator which makes it much easier to generate your own activities with traffic.  It is payware.

The add-on routes usually use their own equipment, but like I said you can drive anything anywhere in explore mode.
