MSTS add-on ... can't get to work

  • I downloaded a skin for a Santa Fe Yellow/Blue Dash 9-44CW for MSTS from www.railserve.com, but cannot get it to work with my program. Can anyone help me to get it? It tells me I need to:

Install Instructions: unzip the contents of this .zip to a folder named "dash9at: in your Train Simulator/trains/trainset directory.

I tried everything to get it to work, but no luck:(  Would I need to uninstall the whole game, then re-install it again< And where should I put it so I can access it to add-on features?

Thanks for the help, I am most needing any assistance you can give.

  • You do not need to uninstall and reinstall MSTS.

Here is what I do for almost all the equipment I download for MSTS, and that is a lot.

I save everything to a dedicated place for MSTS downloads.  If you do this, you can follow these steps.

First, unzip the file in place, not to the train file.  Too many people put in pictures and other documentation outside the rolling stock or locomotive file, which just ends up taking up space later.  The file usually has the recommended name already.  For locomotives, you definitely need to check if the cabview and sound files are present.  Some require you to copy them from other equipment.

Next open the train file in MSTS, which is usually found by going through programs, microsoft games, train-sim,trains,trains.  I am doing this from memory as I am not at home right now.

You can then copy or cut and paste the file directly to the train file.

To be able to use the file, you need to make a consist for it.  You can use the MSTS utilities but I highly recommend Conbuilder (now payware) or Conbuilder Lite (still freeware) to build a train.  It can be as simple as just the locomotive.  After you save it, you should be able to find it in the list in explore the route mode.

There are a few files available that are simpler.   They have installers and do it all for you.  There are also files out there that require shapes from other payware.   I don't remember any on railserve being one.
