  • I loaded the Microsoft Train Simulator the other week and it seems too work fine, there is a Microsoft Train Simulator. com you can access for better help than I can offer.

It could be a conflict with your proccessor chip, I have an AMD K6 and the requirements say a K6 or Pentium III.
  • If wou have a voudou axeleration card ! there is your problem !! . I have the same bug try to disable your card end reinstal your game !!
  • Train Sim will work fine with a 3DFX VooDoo3 3000 card. I used to have one and it worked fine. It works faster and looks much better with my new ATI Radeon 8500. I am running WIndows 2000 with 256 mb ram. 1400mhz Athlon.

  • You should be able to run the "whopper" from "War Games" on that computer...I am jealous.
  • Is it any good? before i get it id like to hear some feedback
  • I've got it and I hate it. It took three days to get it working dealing with the Microsoft folks and when I got there I was disappointed in it. It moves in realtime and just doesn't have enough feature to keep me awake. Major disappointment. Just how many times can those same 3 elks be on the damned track? BTW, why are the elks on the track in Maryland?
  • I finally bought a new graphics card to get it working properly, and have only begun to try operating trains. But I am very disappointed in the graphics and background (Amtrak corridor has much more vegitation and does not run superliner equipment). Nor is the train reaction that realistic so far. Steam chuff sound is way too slow at speed. And you can't see out of a steam loco. Plus on one of the Japanese lines you run into a storage shed unless you throw a switch to get to the main line. That was strange.
I will be playing much more before I fully decide the program's value. Much less than I was expecting from the ads, even from Microsoft, but intriguing enough to continue playing.

  • I bought Train Sim right when it came out. I've been waiting for a train sim for years. I think it's great. I don't have the space for a model railroad and if you have a computer you already have the space. Yeah it's real time - that's part of what makes it great. As for improper equipment in certain areas, how many model railroaders bend the rules on their layouts? And if you don't like the routes there are some interesting ones out there - one based on an HO layout in a Kalmbach publication! It's actually my favorite route. There are hundreds of add on locomotives (steam with out the cab views), passenger cars and freight. There are utilities to "richen up" the sky, the vegetation, the roadbed.
MSTS Train Sim doesn't appear to require a mega system if you read the system requirements on the package but the more computer you have the better it's going to operate - just like any other game or simulator out there.
It sounds to me like a lot of you aren't doing a lot of looking into what's out there. If I had a layout in my house and had the number of locos and rolling stock that I have in Train Sim I'd be broke and backrupt. Give it a chance...............

  • I received the Train Simulator as a gift last week and have been enjoying it very much. The challenge of working throttle and brake to keep speed at or below posted, and to couple and switch cars without derailing has kept my interest. I think the graphics are fine, especially the ability to chose so many different views of the train, both inside and out. One odd problem I've run into occasionally is that on the Cutbank grain car sorting activity the track switches don't reliably throw, causing me to back the locomotive onto the siding I just left and neccessitating repeated moves. Any simulated railfans watching must think I'm pretty silly.
Any one else have that problem?

  • I have a mega Gateway P4 with plenty of ram, 40 gig drive and good vidio. A machine worth about 3500 dollars. I baught the sim for the extra realism of working with different trains and not the graphics. Sure I hate the let down with the crappy and blocky textures which remind me of the first Nukem game. But if people want better graphics then they should stick to the programs like 3D CADD Layout Maker or something. I have a new layout made and do not have to worry about it. The graphics are choppy at times but that is my Vidio set up and not the sim. I found out when I had an old 386 about ten years ago that you do not get cheap on computer add ons or upgrades. I found that out when I baught my Bachmann GP-35 not too long ago. Don't buy cheap. Enjoy the sim and wait for the add-ons for it or go to the web sites that support the sim and find drivers for it. I baught my sim about two days ago and did not expect it to be perfect.

I just received Train Sim as a gift. I too am having problems with graphics and switching commands. But then my computer is out of the last century (c.1999), so I know I need to update the video card. Even at that I think that my 400hz processor will still be too slow. New computer anyone?
I do enjoy what I can get out of Train Sim. It is a great improvement over the first train simulator programs that Simmons-Boardman made available. Your view choice? Looking down the line from the cab of a GP-9. The only thing that changed was the perception of speed as the telephone poles that wizzing past. And all this in black and white. So enjoy the ride, and in the mean time maybe Micro-Bill will improve and update Train Sim.
  • Hi folk.. I've read about half the posts on this forum and maybe someone has mentioned this stuff already.

I received MSTS as a gift and had alot of trouble getting it to work at first, but then I went to the official web site and got the patches that microshaft has released and that has cured the start up problems I was having with both simulator and the route tools.

If you look around on the web there are alot of great resources available both free and ones that cost money. www.Railserve.com has a large library of add-ons for the game including locomotives, routes, skins of your favorite lines, tools to improve the gameplay and other such stuff. You just have to register with them to download.

Another good source is www.alabamarailfan.com, they have alot of good skins to use as well.

If you can't find the skin you are looking for make it. You can usually find a template for a specific loco and use your favorite paint program to paint your own skin. If you can't find the right loco you can build it with gmax,a free 3d editor for games from discreet(the folks who make 3d studio max) you can get the game pack from the official train sim web site. Get gmax at www.gmaxsupport.com it's about 50mb's large so download when you go to bed. you can also get plug-ins for this program to import .3ds files so you can import other peoples files to modify as you need to.

I personally feel that MS has done an incredible job with this game and feel that if you put in as much effort you can make it even better not only for yourself but for others.

By the way if you like switching try out the "Time Saver" route from
    www.railwaystation.com/trainsim/
It's fun and the great thing is that it's free!!!

  • Audibal,

Thanks much for the suggestion to visit the official Train Simulator site for the download!
    That was very helpful.
