Just got a copy of Trainz 2010 Deluxe version. Seems to be a real piece of crap. On the Tutorials (which is as far as I've been), everything moves in "steps", NO "fluid motion". The locomotives advance in half-second jumps. Is this just a mindless, juvenile piece of junk? I was expecting a LOT more!

Not the best thing since sliced bread, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it crap. The newer version of Trainz requires a heap of CPU power to run smooth. The biggest problem is that Auran is still using the Jet backend from their first Trainz version over ten years ago, and this is why you're seeing the lag - what we've called the "rubberband effect" since day one - worse now only because the graphic overhead has increased over the years.
Nevertheless, turning down the details will help, but also ensure that you don't have any unnecessary background programs running, such as Norton Utilities, MS Office, etc. If one of those programs is anti-virus/system protection, then you would be wise to disconnect from the 'net before switching it off.
Also be sure to compare your system specs to those Auran listed as a minimum requirement. If you've just made the grade, then you may need to shop for more power - either in the form of a new CPU or graphics card.

I have ordered a new laptop from HP. It has more memory (4gb) and a better graphics card. My old one has 2gb memory. I hope spending $500 to play a $40 game somehow begins to make sense!
When you get your new laptop be sure to remove the bloatware. Use 'PCdecrapifier', it's a decent tool.
Or Control Panel --> Programs and Features.
Also be sure to close web browsers when you are playing games. Adobe flash can gob up resources.
If you think Trainz 2010 is crap, try Trainz 2009........
